Pelosi commends California legislation that provides financial assistance to illegal immigrants for homeownership: "American dream" now more attainable.
HBO's Bill Maher told the top Democrat: "I want to move them to documented status."
Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker from California, appeared to back her state's contentious legislation that offers financial assistance to illegal immigrants in purchasing homes.
The California Housing Finance Authority's home purchase assistance program, known as the California Dream for All Program, would be required to include undocumented migrants under California law, making them eligible for taxpayer loans to become first-time homeowners.
The former Speaker proposed legalizing these illegal immigrants by moving them to documented status, stating that comprehensive immigration reform would be beneficial for the economy.
On "Real Time with Bill Maher" on Friday, Pelosi was asked to give her thoughts on the bill's passing.
Is it not true that the Democratic Party's stance on immigration has changed significantly, Bill Maher questioned.
Pelosi stated that immigration had always been a contentious issue among Democrats and Republicans.
"But not free housing," Maher interjected.
"Pelosi countered, stating that while the American Dream is becoming more accessible, it is not free housing. She emphasized the importance of understanding immigration and referenced President Ronald Reagan's speech, where he spoke about the Statue of Liberty and the Beacon of Hope it represents to the world. Reagan emphasized that America's preeminence comes from its open door policy, and shutting it would diminish that status."
"I cannot do justice to the Great Communicator's speech. Look it up online. It's a fantastic speech, and George Herbert Walker Bush continued to respect diversity in his speeches. California is always ahead of the curve. Perhaps others will follow their lead, but that's up to them. However, we are fortunate to have such beautiful diversity here," she concluded.
"So you'd vote for this law?" Maher then asked.
Pelosi stated that she is not well-versed in the specifics of the issue, but ensuring that the American dream of homeownership is accessible to all individuals is a necessity for those currently residing in the country.
Maher emphasized that this applies to individuals who are not yet citizens.
"Pelosi replied, "I'd like to move them to documented status. One of the best things we can do for our economy is pass comprehensive immigration reform.""
