Peggy Noonan recounts her recent encounter with Trump after avoiding him for 8 years: 'He was hilarious'
Noonan felt that up close, he would be charming and funny, but it would disrupt her observation.
Peggy Noonan, a Wall Street Journal columnist, spoke about her recent meeting with President-elect Donald Trump after avoiding him for eight years, expressing her concern that his "charming" demeanor would cloud her judgment.
"Noonan stated in a recent conversation with Bari Weiss that she never met Trump until two or three weeks ago, despite his office and aides reaching out to her in 2015 and 2016 when he was running for president. Noonan declined their invitation to meet Trump, stating that she did not want to."
"I had a feeling that seeing him up close would make me feel uncomfortable, and that there would be something endearing about him, but it would also mess with my ability to observe him objectively. I didn't want to see him too far away or too close, but I wanted to see him at a middle distance where I could observe him clearly."
Noonan, a vocal critic of Trump, acknowledged the hostile relationship they have had and the attacks she faced through tweets and rallies, stating that she will look back on it with a sense of warmth.
"Recently, Noonan met with the Wall Street Journal editorial board and felt an instinct to warn him not to go. However, she then corrected herself and decided to let him come to the newspaper. Noonan has been writing about him for eight years and has occasionally criticized him, and she felt it was wrong for him to come to her newspaper and not be able to take revenge or do whatever he wanted."
"As we wait for Trump, I'm sitting next to Paul Gigot, the editorial editor of The Wall Street Journal. In the silence, Paul asks, "How many times have you met Trump?" I reply, "I've never met Trump." Paul is surprised and says, "You've never met Trump?!?" He then says, "Whoa, we're gonna have a drama here." Suddenly, I think, "Oh, gosh, maybe it will be a drama." You know how Trump acts, like when he's going to be horrible. But then, the doors fly open and the entourage comes in, and there's Trump, who in person is huge, with huge hair and everything. He blows by others and says to me, "You are wonderful. You are the most remarkable woman.""
Noonan stated that he sat down with the individual and they went on and off the record. However, off the record, the person was hilarious, rude, and inappropriate, making inappropriate comments about foreign leaders that should not be made to a group of journalists. Despite this, Noonan remained silent and thought by the end of the encounter, "Honey, your intuition was right. If you'd met him in 2015, you would have loved him and not seen him."
Recently, Noonan, a former Reagan speechwriter and author of "A Certain Idea of America," stated on Planet Chronicle that the country is currently experiencing a significant event following Trump's election.
Noonan stated that he believes people feel that they don't enjoy what they've witnessed of the 21st century and that Mr. Trump shared this sentiment. As a result, they elected him twice. Additionally, he believes that more than half of the country is reacting strongly against the establishment.
