Pacific Palisades high school looks for temporary campus following devastating LA wildfires.
Charlie Speiser, the student body president of PCHS, stated, "Our main objective is to reunite our community."
PCHS in Los Angeles is seeking the community's assistance in locating a new campus following the severe damage of its previous one due to the ongoing wildfires in California.
"Charlie Speiser, the PCHS student body president, stated during an interview on 'Fox & Friends' Wednesday that the start of their high school experience was online due to COVID, which was not effective for anyone. He emphasized that their main goal is to bring their community and Pali Dolphins back together under one roof."
The school, serving approximately 3,000 students from more than 100 zip codes, lost much of its campus to the fires. Although the brick main building remained intact, the wooden bungalows in the back and the athletic fields were destroyed during the blaze.
The administration announced that many students and staff have lost their homes and belongings, and are seeking support and assistance from local businesses, organizations, and individuals to secure a safe and accessible space for the school.
The Pacific Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire are still burning in the Los Angeles area, with Cal Fire reporting that the wildfires have affected at least 664 structures, including the destruction of over 485 of them. The threat of further damage is increasing due to strong winds, and the fires have already resulted in the loss of 24 lives.
Despite the devastation, Speiser said the community is rallying together.
"My personal friends and peers lost their houses, but we are all helping each other out through daily texting and errands. It's inspiring to see the selflessness of everyone."
The school's student body is adaptable and can learn in any space that can accommodate their community, including warehouses and abandoned office buildings.
"Speiser stated, "We are extending our reach to all possible individuals." He emphasized, "Our ultimate goal is to resume in-person (learning) with everyone.""
PCHS's Executive Director and Principal, Dr. Pamela Magee, highlighted the significance of securing a temporary campus.
"Ensuring our students remain in their learning environment with friends and mentors is crucial during this time, and we can achieve this by coming together," she stated.
Magee stated that we have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the fortitude and tenacity of our community in the face of adversity.
Anyone who can help locate a temporary space or provide support should contact the school at [email protected].
