One man in Thailand is on a mission to reduce the world's street dog population by feeding 80 dogs from his moped every morning.

Niall Harbison, the founder of HappyDoggo, who relocated to Koh Samui after years in the corporate world's "rat race," stated that he desired to pursue something "meaningful."

Harbison revealed the origin of Happy Doggo in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital.

Harbison emphasized that street dogs are a common sight in many countries, unlike in the Western world. He stated, "I'm obsessed with dogs, like a lot of people," and shared how he started feeding some of the dogs he encountered on the streets. However, he noted that the street dog issue seemed overwhelming.

Harbison met a dog named Lucky in the jungle and fed her. The next day, he returned to feed her again, and the next day as well. It wasn't long before he had four dogs relying on him. The situation snowballed from there, and soon he had eight dogs. It all happened organically.

Harbison has gained a huge online presence on TikTok and Instagram since launching Happy Doggo in early 2021, by sharing videos of assisting street dogs on the island.

Every morning, he rides his moped around the island to feed 80 street dogs, who have learned to recognize the sound of his vehicle.

"Harbison stated that the dogs are very attached to him, just like having a pet at home. He added that they wait for him on the road at 5 to 8 AM, knowing that their food will arrive at 8 AM. He found this behavior endearing."

Harbison's organization now has a team that feeds, re-homes, and sterilizes street dogs. They currently feed 800 dogs daily, have built a sanctuary for the sickest dogs, and sterilized 1,500 dogs in the past year.

The Happy Doggo founder stated that there is a Thai woman who prepares freshly made food with the help of three assistants. The food is then delivered throughout the island, providing the dogs with a comfortable life and a home-cooked meal daily.

Numerous dogs that they assist have relocated to homes abroad, including their own dog, Brad Pitt, who settled in California.

In one moment, they were strolling in the streets of Thailand, and the next, Brad Pitt was strolling on the beach in Long Beach, California.

The only way to truly reduce the street dog population and alleviate their suffering is through sterilization, according to Harbison, who believes that re-homing dogs is the ideal but impractical solution due to a lack of available homes.

Harbison stated that although he could house 500 dogs in the sanctuary tomorrow, it wouldn't address the issue at hand. Instead, he emphasized that neutering the dogs is their top priority.

Harbison stated, "We're trying to decrease the numbers because only then can we achieve a positive change. However, it's challenging for people to comprehend the magnitude of the issue. On Instagram, my most frequent message is, 'Take the dog home with you.' But I respond, 'It's impossible. We can't take every dog.' Therefore, we must find practical solutions."

The dog lover aims to sterilize 25,000 dogs by 2024 and is currently on track to surpass this goal.

Harbison sees the global street dog crisis as a "start-up," and he is collaborating with other partners to expand and intensify the effort.

"In the world, there are 500 million street dogs, which is a significant number. In fact, it's more than the population of America. My goal is to reduce that number by half in my lifetime, which is an ambitious target. However, I believe it's achievable," he stated.
