New York mag suspends reporter Olivia Nuzzi over alleged romantic ties with RFK Jr.
Nuzzi issues apology for not disclosing personal relationship earlier, stating it was never physical.
An internal investigation at New York magazine led to the suspension of reporter Olivia Nuzzi on Thursday night, following reports that she had developed a romantic relationship with a prominent figure in the 2024 presidential race, former candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Nuzzi admitted to the magazine's editors that she had a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 campaign while reporting on the campaign, which violated the magazine's standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures, according to New York magazine.
Kennedy was the subject of a feature written by Nuzzi, the magazine's Washington Correspondent, during the presidential election coverage.
Nuzzi issued a statement on Thursday night, confirming that she never had a physical relationship with her former reporting subject but did engage in "personal" communications with them. She did not mention Kennedy.
"This year, I had a personal relationship with a former reporting subject, which should have been disclosed to prevent a conflict of interest. Although I did not directly report on the subject or use them as a source, I deeply regret not disclosing the relationship immediately and apologize to those I've disappointed, particularly my colleagues at New York."
If the magazine had been informed of the relationship, Nuzzi would not have been in charge of reporting on the campaign.
"If the magazine had been aware of the relationship, it would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of her work found no inaccuracies or bias. The magazine has placed her on leave and is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We apologize for the violation of our readers' trust."
A media blog, Status, claimed that the person the blogger allegedly had a relationship with was Kennedy, who is married to actress Cheryl Hines. Kennedy suspended his campaign last month and endorsed Donald Trump.
According to sources, Nuzzi did not disclose her alleged relationship with Kennedy to New York magazine and the outlet only recently learned of it. The alleged relationship did not begin until after a November 2023 profile on Kennedy was published, a close friend of Nuzzi said. Nuzzi did not use Kennedy as a source while covering the 2024 campaign, the friend added.
A representative from Kennedy's team did not promptly respond to a request for comment from Planet Chronicle Digital.

New York magazine declined additional comment when asked about the Kennedy report.
Nuzzi faced criticism after Bloomberg allegedly canceled the promotion of her six-episode interview series "Working Capital" following a left-wing backlash resulting from a critical report she wrote about President Biden.
The report on Biden's mental decline before he exited the 2024 race revealed a "conspiracy of silence" to keep it hidden. After Nuzzi's report was published, Biden dropped out and the Democratic Party faced increased pressure to address his mental health.
In July, an assassination attempt was made on Trump, and she wrote a profile of him in the following month.
