New trans policy in USA Boxing allows men to compete against women, says former female boxer.
Christy Martin predicted that a person would suffer severe injuries due to this policy.
A former female boxer raised concerns about USA Boxing's policy allowing trans women to compete against women.
The USA Boxing organization has recently implemented a policy that allows transgender competitors to compete in the gendered divisions they identify with, effective January 1, 2024.
Christy Martin, a former prominent female boxer, expressed her disbelief to Planet Chronicle Digital that the USA boxing would allow transgender individuals to compete, stating that it is essentially allowing a man to fight a woman.
In 2016, Martin became the first woman to be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, and she has also been inducted into six other Halls of Fame. By the time she retired in 2012, Martin had a record of 49 wins and 7 losses, with 31 of those wins coming by knockout.
Martin stated that although your body and bone structure differ in density, it could lead to a serious injury.
She warned about the potential lethal effects of the new allowances.
The new USA Boxing policy allows transgender men and women to compete in the biological divisions, with specific requirements for each category.
- The athlete has declared their gender as either male or female and has undergone gender reassignment surgery.
- The athlete has undergone hormone testing every three months for at least four years after surgery.
- The athlete must have testosterone levels below 5 nmol/L for at least 48 months before competing as a transgender woman.
- To be eligible to compete in the male category, transgender men must maintain testosterone levels above 10 nmol/L.
Martin explained how the new regulations could discourage new female boxers from joining the sport, as women's boxing is currently facing challenges in growing.
Martin stated that it is not fair for someone who trains hard and competes in a tournament to face a male opponent, as they do not have a sufficient pool of opponents.
The former boxer discussed the possibility of transgender men competing in the men's division, stating, "we're all focusing on male to female. But this also goes female to male."
If transgender women are taking testosterone, they may have an advantage against male competitors due to their elevated testosterone levels, similar to juicing, which is illegal.
Ebanie Bridges and Amanda Serrano, like Martin, are upset with the boxing organization's decision and have expressed their discontentment on social media.
Martin stated that the general reaction to the decision is negative, and he hasn't spoken to anyone who thinks it's a good idea, according to the consensus within the boxing community.
Female boxers' fathers have conveyed to Martin that they would "never" allow their daughters to compete against a transgender individual.
"Coaches have told me that they will never allow their boxer to compete against a transgender person, which will only harm women's boxing more than it will help," she stated.
The boxing champion explained that life involves making choices, which may require sacrifices and consequences based on those decisions.
She stated that she fully supports someone who wants to be transgender, as it is their personal choice and right to do so.
"However, making that decision means giving up some opportunities, including the chance to compete in sports. This is particularly true in combat sports like boxing, where physical differences can be crucial factors. She emphasized the importance of this idea, stating that transitioning to be happy as a male is more important than competing in boxing. In her opinion, competing in any sport, including boxing, would not even factor into the equation."
USA Boxing was reached for comment but they have yet to respond.
