Nearly 90% of Washington Post's daily digital reader base decreased during the Biden years, according to internal data.
In mid-2024, 'the Post's daily users hovered around 2.5-3 million daily users.'
During President Biden's tenure, The Washington Post has experienced a significant decline in its daily digital traffic, according to internal data shared with Semafor.
The website's daily online readership peaked during the beginning of the Biden administration, but by the end, it had lost almost all of its readers.
According to Semafor, the Post's daily traffic in 2021 reached a low of 2.5-3 million daily active users, which was a quarter of its peak in January 2021, when it had around 22.5 million daily active users.
That is approximately an 87 percent drop in online readership.
According to The New York Post, the liberal outlet experienced a significant decline in readership from 114 million readers in Nov. 2020 to 54 million digital visitors in Nov. 2024.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that the decline in readers has resulted in a loss of approximately $100 million in subscription and ad revenue in 2024.
Recently, the Post has faced even more difficulties, including a significant decline in traffic and the loss of 250,000 paid subscribers after Jeff Bezos instructed the outlet not to endorse a 2024 presidential candidate.
Several prominent Post staffers resigned from the paper following Bezos’ move.
In recent weeks, several staff members at The Washington Post have resigned, including editor at large Robert Kagan, reporters Josh Dawsey, Ashley Parker, Michael Scherer, Tyler Page, and Leigh Ann Caldwell, columnist Charles Lane, and veteran editor Matea Gold.
In January, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Ann Telnaes left The Post after it declined to publish her cartoon showing Bezos begging Trump.
On Monday, Jennifer Rubin, a prominent Post columnist, announced her resignation and stated in a recent interview with CNN that The Post has failed dismally at a crucial time when a strong, assertive free press is needed.
In her resignation letter, the columnist explained why she could not continue working at The Post, stating that Jeff Bezos and his allies were enabling the greatest threat to American democracy - Donald Trump - at a time when a free and vibrant press was crucial for the survival and prosperity of our democracy.
This month, the outlet is reported to have laid off 4 percent of its workforce across its business divisions, in addition to the resignations.
The Washington Post did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
