Muslim interviewer taken aback by Harris campaign's refusal to discuss Gaza, instead talks about bacon.
The interview with the Muslim influencer reportedly prohibited discussing the Israel-Gaza war.
The interview with a Muslim social media influencer featuring Kamala Harris was not released after the vice president declined to address questions about Gaza but instead praised bacon, a food that is forbidden in Islam.
Kareem Rahma, the host of "Subway Takes," with over a million followers on Instagram and TikTok, decided to cancel his interview with Harris, which was recorded in the summer, according to the New York Times.
Despite reaching out to Harris on three calls with her team and the Democratic National Committee, Rahma was unable to discuss the Biden administration's support for Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza, which he opposes, as reported by the Times.
The campaign decided that Harris would present a "hot take" against individuals removing their shoes on airplanes. The program centers on guests, some of them well-known, arguing for an unpopular viewpoint or outlook.
The New York Times reported that Rahma ultimately agreed to the terms, reasoning that he had the option to not publish the video if it made him uncomfortable.
During the interview with Harris, Rahma expressed a unique perspective, stating that "bacon is a spice." As an observant Muslim, she abstains from consuming pork in accordance with her faith.
"In the unaired interview, he was reportedly taken aback."
According to footage reviewed by the Times, she said, "Consider it - it's all about taste."
According to the Times, Rahma paused the interview to mention that he doesn't eat pork, and then tried to steer the conversation back to the agreed-upon topic of removing shoes during flights. However, Harris countered with another food comment, which the Times claimed was based on the advice of a staff member, and praised anchovies on pizza.
"In the recording, Harris was informed by Rahma that she was completely uncertain about both of those things."
Rahma decided not to broadcast the interview, as she feared it would cause controversy among the Muslim community.
The Times reported that he was apprehensive about criticism from other Muslims and the bacon talk had disrupted him.
"Rahma explained to the outlet that the issue was complex because she is Muslim and there is a global event that all Muslims are concerned about. However, the situation was made worse when they discussed anchovies, which she found uninteresting."
According to the Times, two senior Harris campaign officials claimed that Rahma was informed about the bacon topic beforehand, but Rahma and his manager denied this. Despite this, the campaign reportedly apologized for the bacon reference and proposed reshooting, as per the Times. However, Rahma ultimately decided not to proceed.
In August, Rahma interviewed Tim Walz, Harris' running mate, about gutter maintenance in a viral exchange.
Harris, who has been criticized for shying away from the media during the early stages of her campaign, has a history of stumbling in interviews and media interactions. She has frequently faced criticism for her "word salads," a term used by her detractors to describe her repetitive, often incoherent statements made throughout the election season.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive a response from the Harris campaign.
