MSNBC hosts criticized for meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago: "You can't do that," says former lawmaker.
He remarked that it would lead to trouble for him.
On Friday, David Jolly, a former lawmaker and MSNBC analyst, seemed to criticize Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski while discussing the way Democrats should proceed.
"We didn't wake up after the election and think, I'm upset because I was wrong. We're upset because we know we're right, but we're on the losing side of this battle. And so what does that mean for a responsible media, for a responsible electorate, for a responsible Democratic Party in this environment?" Jolly began. "Don't just say we're going to give equity to Donald Trump, which some people are doing in the Democratic Party, in media, among the electorate."
In the weeks after his election, President-elect Donald Trump met with Brzezinski and Scarborough at Mar-a-Lago.
"I'm sorry, but that's completely incorrect. You cannot do that. Please forgive me for saying this, but you cannot go to Mar-a-Lago. That's not allowed. It will put me in trouble. You cannot do that. You must hold Donald Trump accountable for being wrong. You must also hold all of his allies accountable for being wrong, even if it means being in a losing environment and putting your own liberty and security at risk as an American," Jolly stated.
During the show, Scarborough and Brzezinski stated that it was necessary to interact with Trump.
Nearly 80 million Americans prioritized issues that led them to re-elect Donald Trump over election denialism, public trials, and January 6, according to Brzezinski.
In recent years, Brzezinski and Scarborough have been among Trump's most vocal critics in the media. Trump stated after the meeting that it was successful.
During a podcast interview, Brzezinski expressed surprise at the backlash to their meeting.
"The backlash has taken me by surprise, and I believe people are truly scared," she stated on "The Daily Beast Podcast." "One of the reasons we entered the discussion was because of the fear surrounding Donald Trump's comments about political opponents, as well as the fear surrounding what has happened with abortion. These are issues that are important to me and, in some ways, personal to me and the people I care about the most."
Jolly encouraged Democrats to "double down" in holding Trump accountable.
He stated that the only solution is to intensify efforts to hold Donald Trump and his supporters responsible and to intensify efforts to promote a democracy that represents all individuals, even in a challenging context.
