Missouri AG to investigate gym over alleged violation of women's privacy in locker room.
''If you continue to disregard the law and put women and young girls at risk in our state, you will face the consequences.'
The St. Louis branch of Life Time Fitness may face both civil and criminal liabilities following allegations that it implemented a policy permitting transgender women to use the female locker rooms, as announced by the state's attorney general on Friday.
Missouri AG Andrew Bailey wrote to Life Time Fitness CEO that although allowing biological males to use any restroom they prefer is a common corporate policy, he would not permit it under his authority.
"Despite being fashionable in some corporate boardrooms, biology is still relevant in the American heartland, where Missourians recognize that allowing adult men to openly invade and disrobe in spaces set aside for women and young girls is indefensible and places political correctness above public safety."
An incident occurred where a 52-year-old transgender woman entered the women's locker room at Life Time, causing outrage among some customers. The staff then corrected customers, instructing them to use specific language when discussing the trans person.
Bailey alleged that instead of addressing the safety concerns of gym members, you dismissively correct them and demand they use the "correct pronouns" for a biological male.
After receiving multiple complaints from constituents, he stated that he was investigating potential criminal charges against the gym for allowing a biological male to use women and girls' private spaces.
The Missouri AG argued that a biological male entering a female-only space was a violation of the law based on a precedent he had previously established.
"When separate restrooms are designated for males and females, it is illegal for a male to enter a female's restroom."
A biological male who exposes himself in a female space may face additional criminal liability for multiple sexual offenses, including first-degree sexual misconduct and the felony offense of sexual misconduct involving a child, according to Bailey.
The AG warned that the Life Time gym's policies may be enabling criminal behavior and that it will not continue on his watch. If the gym continues to endanger women and young girls in defiance of the law, the AG warned, they will face consequences.
Life Time fitness did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
The company had previously stated that it was adhering to the existing state laws.
Life Time recognizes that opinions on locker room access vary. As a company, we follow the law in every area we operate, respecting public accommodation. When members join Life Time, we verify their identity by reviewing state-issued IDs. The State of Missouri offers a process for individuals to update their gender designation on their driver's license.
"Based on Missouri laws, we cannot discriminate against the member on the basis of sex. As a result, the member is allowed to use Life Time's women's locker room."
