Michelle Obama avoids Trump inauguration to maintain authenticity.
For the second time in two weeks, the ex-first lady will not attend a gathering of former presidents and their spouses.
According to new reports, Michelle Obama is avoiding President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration next week to conceal her dislike for the incoming president.
""Michelle Obama doesn't follow protocol or tradition when it comes to expressing her feelings about [Trump]. She's not afraid to show her true emotions, even if it means appearing unpleasant," a source close to the former first lady told People Magazine."
According to the source, Obama fulfilled her duties as first lady for eight years in the public eye and did all the public good she could. However, she is no longer a public figure and will only be seen when she has a project or cause to promote.
Michelle Obama's longtime allies believe her decision to skip the inauguration was an act of resistance, according to The Hill.
"She spoke sincerely on the campaign trail, with every word coming from the depths of her conviction," one ally stated in the report. "She is not a hypocrite."
Another longtime aide speculated that Obama was "conserving some reputation" by staying away from Trump.
During her speeches at the Democratic National Convention in August, the former first lady repeatedly criticized Trump, accusing him of spreading "racist lies" and opposing her husband's political career because of his race.
Although she won't be present, her husband, ex-President Barack Obama, will attend the Jan. 20 inauguration with former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and their spouses.
In 2021, Trump notably deviated from tradition by not attending President Biden's inauguration, making him one of only a few presidents in U.S. history to have skipped the inaugurations of their successors.
Michelle Obama has missed a second gathering of former presidents and their spouses in two weeks. She did not attend the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter last week, where her husband was seated next to Trump.
CNN's Jeff Zeleny was informed by her advisers that she was absent from the funeral because of a scheduling clash and was in Hawaii on an extended vacation.
The Obama Foundation did not immediately return a request for comment.
Michelle Obama did not attend Trump's inauguration, following Melania Trump's revelation that the Obamas did not provide enough information about moving into the White House in January 2017.
On Monday, the former first lady informed "Fox & Friends" co-host Ainsley Earhardt that she knows the locations of the rooms where they will be residing, as well as the procedures.
"The second time around, the transition is much smoother. We have all the necessary information and plans, and we are ready to move in. We have already packed and selected the furniture that needs to go in."
