Matt Gaetz should seek professional help after viral spat, says Kevin McCarthy: "He looks very unhinged."
'Kevin McCarthy stated that he hopes his political foe receives the necessary assistance, adding, "He appears extremely unstable."'
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., should receive professional assistance following his rival's video-bombing of his live interview on CNN during the Republican National Convention, according to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
"McCarthy stated on Thursday that Gaetz appears unhinged and that many people have concerns about him. While he is unsure if Gaetz is on drugs, he hopes that he receives the help he needs. However, McCarthy's main concern is that young women receive justice when it comes to Gaetz's behavior."
The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and drug use, accepted gifts, granted favors to personal relationships, and obstructed investigations into his conduct. Despite this, Gaetz maintains his innocence.
During a live CNN broadcast, Florida lawmaker Gaetz was mocked by McCarthy, which led to comments about Gaetz being "unhinged."
"Is McCarthy not on the roster tonight?" Gaetz mocked.
During a CNN interview, McCarthy stated that the biggest challenge they face is dealing with the ethics complaint of a person who raised an issue about paying and sleeping with a 17-year-old, even though Gaetz taunted him.
Gaetz stated that if someone took that stage, they would be booed off of it.
McCarthy accused Gaetz of asking him to make the ethics investigation disappear and then led a bipartisan effort to remove him as House speaker, resulting in a tumultuous relationship between the two.
In October, Gaetz submitted a "motion to vacate" alleging McCarthy's ineffective leadership, collaboration with Democrats, and abandonment of conservative principles. The House passed the motion 216-210, marking a historic first in U.S. history where a sitting speaker was removed through such a vote.
""Speaker McCarthy was paralyzing the conservative agenda in the House, which we were concerned about at the time," Gaetz stated."
The group of eight Republicans who joined Democrats in removing McCarthy from power were referred to as "The Gaetz Eight" by McCarthy.
"Matt Gaetz's actions have shattered the Republican majority, resulting in a chaotic situation reminiscent of 'Lord of the Flies.' Anyone within our conference can attest to this," he stated.
By December 2023, McCarthy, who was removed as U.S. Speaker of the House two months ago, announced his resignation.
An investigation into Gaetz's relationship with an underage girl has been ongoing in the House for over a year, prompted by the DOJ. Despite this, the DOJ decided not to charge Gaetz in 2023.
Gaetz denies all allegations.
