Matt Gaetz interrupts Kevin McCarthy's interview at the RNC to tease, "What night are you speaking?"
The former House speaker would be booed off the stage if they took it, according to Gaetz.
During the Republican National Convention on Tuesday evening, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was video-bombed by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.
The former California representative stated on the convention floor that what is being displayed is a more unified Republican Party, before being interrupted by Gaetz, his political adversary.
In a clip, McCarthy seemed to be discussing his removal as speaker when Gaetz moved closer to the camera.
"Are you speaking tonight, or what night are you speaking?" Gaetz mocked.
The person who raised the issue has an ethics complaint about paying and sleeping with a 17-year-old. This is the biggest challenge we face, McCarthy told Collins, while ignoring Gaetz's taunts.
Gaetz stated that if someone took that stage, they would be booed off of it.
McCarthy stated on NBC News Now that the confrontation revealed Matt Gaetz's true character.
"McCarthy stated that four years ago, he had an ethics complaint involving paying an underage girl, which led to a House Ethics Committee investigation. He then attempted to use his influence to stop the investigation, which is illegal. Despite the potential consequences, McCarthy refused to compromise his principles and keep the government open. He added that he kept the government open, and the other party tried to remove him from his position."
"Unfortunately, Matt is here at the party, and I think he shouldn't be on the streets," he added.
McCarthy's commitment to conservative principles was questioned by Gaetz, leading to his removal as speaker.
In October, Gaetz submitted a "motion to vacate" alleging McCarthy's ineffective leadership, collaboration with Democrats, and abandonment of conservative principles. The House passed the motion 216-210, marking a historic first in U.S. history where a sitting speaker was removed through such a vote.
""Speaker McCarthy was paralyzing the conservative agenda in the House, which we were concerned about at the time," Gaetz stated."
The group of eight Republicans who joined Democrats in removing McCarthy from power were referred to as "The Gaetz Eight" by McCarthy.
"Matt Gaetz's actions have shattered the Republican majority, resulting in a chaotic situation reminiscent of 'Lord of the Flies.' Anyone within our conference can attest to this," he stated.
By December 2023, McCarthy, who was removed as U.S. Speaker of the House two months ago, announced his resignation.
The House Ethics Committee declared in June that it would investigate further allegations against Gaetz, including sexual misconduct, drug use, accepting gifts, granting favors to personal relationships, and obstructing investigations.
An investigation into Gaetz's relationship with an underage girl has been ongoing in the House for over a year, prompted by the DOJ. Despite this, the DOJ decided not to charge Gaetz in 2023.
The committee also noted that Gaetz denies all allegations.
