Maher criticizes CNN for being overly enthusiastic about Kamala Harris, accusing the network of being "gushing" over her to its anchor.
The conservative pundit Scott Jennings was shown sympathy by the liberal host on CNN.
On Friday, Bill Maher, the host of "Real Time," criticized CNN's coverage of the DNC convention during an interview with Kaitlan Collins.
Maher, who hosts an HBO show on CNN (both networks are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery), started the conversation by bringing up Collins' viral moment on "The Late Show" where Colbert's liberal audience chuckled after he called CNN "objective."
"Maher questioned, "I'm a big supporter of CNN, but that says a lot, doesn't it?" He then asked, "What do you guys think about CNN's role in the politically divided country? Shouldn't it be a platform for both sides to watch? How are you doing with that?""
"CNN is a platform where both sides can view the news. My program demonstrates this. We feature lawmakers from both parties, such as Elizabeth Warren and Ted Cruz. In fact, we had 300 CNN reporters on the ground covering the Chicago convention. Our team alone had several reporters on the floor, providing real-time coverage. CNN invests in news and brings a level of quality that is unmatched."
"Maher stated that he was referring to the individuals featured on CNN and was aware of the conservative perspective in America. He acknowledged that he understood their viewpoint and did not hold any blame towards them."
Maher shifted his focus to CNN's coverage of Vice President Kamala Harris' speech during the convention on Thursday night, highlighting that she ended her address at 11:09 ET.
Maher inquired, "What's the name of the one conservative guy? It wasn't until 11:23."
"Scott Jennings," Collins answered.
"Lonely Scott was praised for his speech from 8:09 to 8:23 (PT), but Maher thought it was overhyped. He believes she did well, but not as great as they were making it out to be. As a conservative watching CNN, he appreciated the balanced coverage for 15 minutes, calling it great. Then Lonely Scott appeared."
"It resembles tokenism, similar to 'The View,' and it's almost preferable to have no one there like MSNBC," he stated.
Maher's characterization of CNN as unfair was challenged by Collins, who stated, "I believe CNN is fair."
"Collins stated, "I feel confident in my ability to discuss this topic as I am from Alabama, a very conservative state with a family that leans towards Trump. My show's audience trusts me, and I believe that people want more of that kind of honest analysis, not just what aligns with their political leanings. Last night, my colleagues, including Dana Bash, Jake Tapper, and Abby Phillip, provided insightful analysis, regardless of their political affiliations.""
"Collins was informed by Maher that they appeared that way. In that moment, it was like five to one. It always seems like five to one."
He also criticized CNN's town hall with former President Trump, noting how the live audience was "admiring him" before the network switched to "five people criticizing him."
CNN did not immediately respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
