Maher advises Americans to 'avoid letting politics spoil the holidays': Shouldn't 'disconnect' for Trump victory?
Maher joked that family is not the same as gender and you cannot resolve issues by removing members.
Bill Maher, the host of "Real Time," ended his final show of the year by encouraging people to enjoy the holidays without letting politics ruin them.
"Let's not let politics ruin the holidays," Maher said Friday night. "Half the country is feeling down. Half are overeating. That's enough. It's Christmas, so let's act like it!"
The FEMA worker who directed staff not to aid Floridians with pro-Trump signs outside their homes after Hurricane Milton and the Ohio sheriff who posted on social media, "If you support the Democratic Party, I will not assist you," were criticized by Maher.
"This must end on both sides," Maher stated. "In America, I want to be evaluated based on the substance of my character, not the features of my yard."
"To remain a viable society, there must be some things that transcend politics, such as disaster relief and law enforcement, and not use Christmas as an excuse to cut people off."
Maher joked that family isn't like gender and you can't fix it by cutting off members, as seen in an article on The Huffington Post titled "My husband [and his family] voted for Trump, so I'm canceling Thanksgiving and Christmas."
Dr. Amanda Calhoun, the chief psychiatry resident at Yale University, was criticized by the HBO host for suggesting that it was acceptable to cut off family members who voted for President-elect Donald Trump and to avoid spending the holidays with them.
"Maher expressed his disapproval of certain people sitting with him on the bus, likening it to the civil rights icon Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat. He also criticized mental health professionals for advising people to isolate during the holidays and drink excessively, leading to weight gain."
Maher stated that he wouldn't want to have Thanksgiving dinner with an overly educated academic who is extremely stupid, but he would because it's necessary for the nation to heal. He emphasized the importance of understanding and accepting others' perspectives without judging them as monsters. Similarly, he urged the academic to do the same for him.
Maher vowed that Trump would have a "good Christmas" despite the fact that "embittered liberals spent what should have been a day of joy all by themselves drinking cage-free eggnog and crying in their 'We’re not going back' T-shirts."
"Maher joked that Trump should not be allowed to live in people's minds like RFK's worm and should not make them hate their families more. He added that although Trump will win the election again, he will not get Maher's mind."
