In Shreveport, Louisiana, a pastor and football coach are making a significant difference in the lives of young people.
Since its founding in 1980, Evangel Christian Academy has achieved remarkable success under the leadership of Louisiana Tech hall-of-fame quarterback Denny Duron. With 12 district championships, 14 state championships, one national title, and 14 graduates playing in the NFL, the program has made a significant impact on the lives of young men. Pastor Duron is grateful for the opportunity to teach the word of God to 75 young men every morning, many of whom have never owned a Bible before. The program is focused on family and faith, with football serving as a tool to convey the message of Jesus to the students.
"We never stop praying for our boys, who have experienced great trauma and pain in their lives and homes. Evangel is vastly different from their environment, and many of them have been hurt."
The new Fox Nation series "God. Family. Football" follows the real-life challenges faced by members of Shreveport, Louisiana's Evangel Christian Academy football team as they strive for their 15th state championship title.
The Evangel Eagles' high school life is depicted in the series, which covers challenges such as family issues, peer pressures, home struggles, and first-time dating, all while showcasing practices, strategy sessions, homecoming, and the ups and downs of adolescence.
Duron shared with Planet Chronicle Digital that his journey to becoming a pastor and coach was guided by God, even though there were moments when he struggled to comprehend it.
Denny signed with the Washington Redskins as a third-string quarterback, but before he could play, Duron announced that the Lord had spoken to him and said it was his last day at training camp.
"As I walked across the road from the training camp in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and got my car, I sat down and said, 'okay, Lord, you've used football as a platform. But now that I won't be a player anymore, I pray that you put me in touch and allow me to influence those who will have a platform,'" he said.
The pastor's prayers for Duron to faithfully influence others have seemingly come true, as he has instilled an overwhelming amount of faith in his players from various generations.
At Evangel Christian Academy, "Coach Duron" coached many All-Americans and set new national records for offensive yardage, touchdowns, and points scored.
Evangel Christian Academy has been recognized as one of the top eight high school springboards to the NFL by USA Today and was named the 1999 National High School Champions by Fox Sports. The 2024 season could see as many as eight former Evangel Eagles in the NFL.
