Local leaders and Trump are being blamed by Newsom for the wildfire response.
During a recent podcast appearance, Newsom stated that he wasn't receiving clear responses from LA leaders.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., seemed to dodge the question when asked about the anger of Los Angeles residents regarding his wildfire response, stating that he was not fully informed about the extent of the damage due to a lack of clear communication from local leaders and members of his own team.
In a recent interview with the liberal podcast "Pod Save America," the governor admitted that he has struggled to obtain clear information about the causes of the wildfire response from lower-level leaders, which he believes has hindered his ability to effectively respond to the crisis.
As the governor of California, I want to know the answer to the question "What happened?" but I can't tell you how many people asked it because it was only my team who asked it. I'll be honest with you, I wasn't getting clear answers from my team.
Favreau stated that his "best friend" who lost his home in The Palisades accused Newsom of "trying to pass the blame" for the crisis. He emphasized that many residents are "angry" about the state's response to the devastating blaze and urged Newsom to take responsibility as the ultimate decision-maker.
Newom acknowledged that he was not fully informed about the slow response and seemed to shift responsibility to other leaders.
Newsom started my team engaging with local leaders, asking, "What's going on?"
"And you weren't receiving clear responses from local leaders?" Favreau interjected. "I was receiving conflicting answers," Newsom confirmed, emphasizing, "and for me, that's not a situation where I'm getting the truth."
Newsom acknowledged that he has been giving these leaders some leeway, recognizing that they are still evaluating the emergency situation.
The wildfire response is causing tempers to rise as "patience is at a premium."
Governor Newsom accused President-elect Trump of mishandling the wildfire response, which led to a feud between the two.
On Wednesday, Trump criticized Newsom for not doing a good job during the crisis. He stated, "It's very sad because I've been trying to get Gavin Newsom to allow water to come - you'd have tremendous water up there, they send it out from the Pacific - because they're trying to protect a tiny little fish. For the sake of a smelt, they have no water... It's a mistake of the governor, and you could say, the administration."
The LADWP stated that due to high water demand, pump stations at lower elevations did not have enough pressure refill tanks at higher elevations, and the ongoing fire hindered the ability of crews to access the pumps.
Despite Trump's claims, there is no water shortage in Southern California at present.
In the podcast interview, Newsom once again criticized Trump for spreading false information.
"The fog is a delusional mantra that has been consistently reinforced by Trump and the right wing for years."
The governor stated that Trump has brought his alleged affinity for misinformation into the crisis in a demeaning and damaging way.
Trump transition team spokesperson Steven Cheung responded to Newsom's accusation, saying to Planet Chronicle Digital, "Instead of appearing on liberal podcasts, maybe Newscum should be doing his job and actually help people who continue to suffer under his terrible leadership."
