Liberal media contradicts their own reporting by claiming Kamala Harris never served as 'border czar.'
Previously, it was reported that Harris had been tasked by Biden with addressing the migration issue at the southern border.
As Kamala Harris approaches Election Day, liberal media outlets are emphasizing that she was never Joe Biden's "border czar" as the Democratic presumptive nominee.
Similar sentiments were expressed by various outlets, including Time Magazine, USA Today, The New York Times, New York Daily News, and Newsweek, all of which deemed the unofficial title to be "misleading" and inaccurate.
The claims made by some publications regarding Harris's role as the "border czar" are perplexing, given that the same publications referred to him as such in their reporting from early 2021.
Axios faced criticism for a report that appeared to conflict with its earlier reporting, and it corrected its story on Wednesday, admitting it had incorrectly labeled her as a border czar.
On Wednesday, Stef Kight wrote that the Trump campaign and Republicans have repeatedly labeled Harris as the "border czar," despite her never holding the title.
In 2021, Axios reported that Harris was appointed by Biden as border czar, and another Axios report by Kight was headlined, "Biden puts Harris in charge of border crisis."
PolitiFact, a left-leaning fact-checker, determined that a Republican claim about her being the border czar was "mostly false" and was part of an attempt to link her to her own administration's immigration policy.
It seems that media outlets across the political spectrum and Biden's own comments have made it clear that Harris is associated with the administration's immigration plans.
The migrant crisis has become a key issue in GOP attacks against Biden, with Harris being tasked early on in the administration to address its root causes.
Biden stated in a March 24, 2021, video that Harris was heading the initiative to collaborate with Mexico and other Northern Triangle countries to tackle problems such as the influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
After Biden's remarks, Politico stated that Biden designated Harris as the "immigration issues lead" in response to the border surge.
At the time, NBC reported that Biden assigned Harris the responsibility of "stopping the flow of migrants" on the southern border.
The Associated Press reported that Biden appointed Harris to lead the response to border difficulties.
In April 2021, it was reported by The New York Times that Harris was replacing Roberta Jacobson, who was famously known as the "border czar."
In the same year, the Times claimed that it was incorrect to categorize Harris in the same manner.
Other outlets joined in an effort to distance Harris from the term as it gained popularity.
The Washington Post reported in 2021 that Republicans attempted to designate Harris as the "border czar," but she declined the title.
Someone who oversees a specific issue, policy, or department is often referred to as a "czar."
Trump's border czar pick, Tom Homan, has not agreed to the job.
The New York Times described Homan as a "loyalist" appointed as "border czar" in a recent immigration reshuffle.
At the time, CNBC reported that Trump named the former acting ICE chief, who stated that undocumented immigrants "should be afraid," as the new border czar.
The term "border czar" has been discussed on CNN and MSNBC.
"On Wednesday, CNN anchor John Berman stated that what Trump said about Harris and immigration was not accurate. He clarified that Harris was never appointed border czar, but rather tasked with diplomatic efforts with the Northern Triangle."
On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on a Wednesday, Symone Sanders-Townsend advised Democrats to combat false information.
Sanders-Townsend stated that she was not the border czar, despite being frequently discussed in conversations about the topic. Instead, she focused on diplomacy in Central America.
On MSNBC, Washington Post correspondent Ashley Parker reported that Kamala Harris faced several "difficult problems" and assumed the role of "unofficial border czar."
Harris's efforts to distance himself from the immigration issue may be inconsistent with his previous statements on major networks.
In September 2022, NBC News' Chuck Todd stated that Harris had been assigned some "unresolvable" tasks, including resolving the immigration crisis at the border.
In 2023, pundits such as "The View" co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin and CNN's Van Jones acknowledged that despite immigration reform being a challenging and intricate issue, Harris, who is in charge of it, appears to be struggling to handle it effectively.
The White House previously rejected the "border czar" description for her role. Instead, it stated that she was responsible for diplomatic outreach to address the "root causes" of migration in the Northern Triangle countries.
On Wednesday, Kevin Munoz, a spokesperson for Harris, told Planet Chronicle Digital that the only "plan" Trump has to secure our border is by separating mothers from their children and displaying xenophobic signs at the Republican National Convention.
"Donald Trump failed to secure the toughest bipartisan border security deal in a generation because his focus has always been on himself, not on actually securing the border. However, there is only one candidate in this race who will fight for real solutions to help secure our nation's border, and that's Vice President Harris."
In 2021, Harris visited Mexico and Guatemala as part of an assignment and also paid a visit to the southern border in El Paso, Texas. A project aimed at encouraging private-sector investment in the region through a call to action has seen more than $5.2 billion committed since May 2021 from over 50 companies and organizations. The number of encounters from those three countries has since fallen from over 700,000 in FY 21 to over 330,000 this fiscal year so far, although it is not clear to what extent it is connected to her efforts.
Despite the ongoing crisis at the border, Republicans and conservatives have already resurfaced Harris' broader stances on immigration beyond her role as vice president. The Republican National Committee posted a clip of Harris discussing abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within an hour of Biden stepping aside.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee, in a memo obtained by Planet Chronicle, criticized Senator Elizabeth Warren's past remarks and actions related to immigration, including her support for decriminalizing border crossings and her role as the "border czar."
The White House did not return Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
Planet Chronicle' Adan Shaw and Brian Flood contributed to this report.
