Liberal film critics panned the 'Reagan' movie as 'worshipful propaganda,' while Obama tribute received positive reviews from critics.
The Washington Post's film critic believes that Reagan fans may overlook the new movie's shallow and rosy portrayal of the former president, similar to the propaganda in a Kremlin May Day parade.
This weekend, a new film about former President Ronald Reagan is being released in theaters. However, liberal film critics have rejected it as "worshipful" and "propaganda."
Despite receiving a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, "Reagan," starring Dennis Quaid, had a low 26% critic score as of Friday.
The Daily Beast was highly critical of the film, labeling it as the "worst movie of the year."
Nick Schager, an entertainment critic, wrote that you might have suspected that the MAGA-tinged hagiography would be complete rubbish, but you underestimated how low it could go.
Despite differing opinions on Ronald Reagan as president, most people will agree that the biopic is preachy, slow, and lacking in grace.
The review scathingly concluded that McNamara's film, despite its ceaseless hero worship of Reagan, is so ungainly and transparent that it plays like embarrassing propaganda, with Reagan riding off into the sunset with an Alzheimer's-afflicted Reagan.
The Washington Post's film critic, Ty Burr, labeled the movie as "rosy and shallow," and "pop-culture propaganda."
Burr stated that the film, which is a hagiography, is likely to be seen as rosy and shallow by those who are faithful to Reagan. He added that the movie is strictly for true believers and has no value as history.
The "Reagan" review by Variety was less harsh than other reviews but was still described as a "blatantly worshipful biopic."
Stephen Farber of The Hollywood Reporter described the film as a "reverential tribute to a controversial politician."
Despite being criticized by some, the 2016 film "Southside with You" received positive reviews from critics, depicting the romantic first date of former President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
Critics gave the film a 91% score, while the audience rated it at 71%.
The Obama film was praised by The New Yorker for its "authentic joy," while Rolling Stone described it as a "magic spell" that blends love and intelligence.
Christian Toto, host of The Hollywood in Toto podcast, told Planet Chronicle Digital that while film critics have the right to praise or criticize any movie they want, the widespread negative reviews of "Reagan" suggest something more.
He continued, "One clue to the critics' reception of biopics on famous liberal figures is the various times the word 'hagiography' is used as a slur."
Critics tend to be liberal and let their political leanings influence their reviews. As a result, when a Michael Moore film is released, it will receive positive reviews, regardless of the content. Films associated with progressive figures like President Barack Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsberg are also praised, even by those who use the term "hagiography."
Ronald Reagan's legacy is viewed through a different lens in 'Reagan,' which openly praises him.
