Lawrence O'Donnell of MSNBC asserts that US military personnel pose a greater danger than illegal immigrants.
American-born military veterans have caused more deadly terrorism in the country than illegal immigrants, according to O'Donnell.
In a segment on MSNBC, Lawrence O'Donnell contended that Americans should view U.S. military personnel rather than illegal immigrants as the perpetrators of terrorism within the country.
"According to O'Donnell, the evidence shows that American-born citizens who have served in the US military have caused more deadly terrorism in this country than those who have crossed the southern border. Therefore, the US Army poses a greater threat to national security than the southern border."
On New Year's Day, a deadly incident occurred on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. A suspect, later identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, is accused of driving a truck into crowds in the French Quarter, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and injuries to many others. Jabbar, armed with a Glock and a .308 rifle, was killed after firing on police.
In his argument, O'Donnell pointed to military veterans, such as Timothy McVeigh, the perpetrator of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, to assert that American veterans have caused more violence than immigrants in U.S. history.
"Timothy McVeigh, an American military veteran, parked a truck loaded with explosives outside a building in an act of homegrown American terrorism. Similarly, an American military veteran drove a pickup truck through a crowd in New Orleans on New Year's Eve, murdering 14 people in the latest terrorist attack in America."
The MSNBC host stated that when Donald Trump witnesses a terrorist attack like the one in New Orleans, he forgets about Timothy McVeigh and instead accuses the criminals he imagines are entering the country through the southern border.
"No one who has ever crossed the southern border has killed more people in this country than Timothy McVeigh, who was born in Lockport, New York, and reached the rank of sergeant in the United States Army."
A press conference was held by law enforcement officials, including the FBI, where a special agent stated that the attack was not linked to terrorism.
The FBI has taken over the investigative lead for the event, and Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan stated during a press conference that it is not a terrorist event. However, the FBI later released statements indicating that the attack is now being investigated as an act of terror, including the discovery of an ISIS flag on the truck that rammed into the crowds.
