LA County's 'useless' management is criticized by filmmaker over wildfires that devastated people's lives.
Justine Bateman argues that these officials should resign out of shame and responsibility.
Justine Bateman, a filmmaker and former "Family Ties" star, criticized Los Angeles County officials for their poor management and unpreparedness in dealing with the ongoing wildfires in the city.
Bateman expressed his frustration on "Jesse Watters Primetime" Thursday, stating that he believes many people in Los Angeles share his anger and that city leaders should improve their handling of such situations.
At least 11 people have died and over 10,000 structures have been destroyed as a result of the Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Hurst Fire, Lidia Fire, and Sunset Fire in LA County. The fires have burned more than 36,000 acres as of Friday.
To successfully manage a city or state, it is crucial to prioritize funding for fire and police departments, as well as to have well-rehearsed plans in place to mitigate the effects of natural disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes, heavy rain, and mudslides in California.
Bateman contended that California's elected officials are "useless" if they do not take proactive measures to prevent disasters before they happen, asserting that they are unable to plan for major events.
"If you can't perform the fundamentals, you should leave our city. You are of no use to us. You are a burden and you have caused harm to others because you failed to fulfill your duties," she stated. "You did not fulfill the tasks you were hired for. You did not fulfill the tasks we paid you for." Bateman emphasized that officials should "resign in disgrace and take responsibility for the people whose lives you have ruined at this very moment."
Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have faced criticism over their management of the wildfires in California. A resident was recorded challenging Newsom, asking about fire readiness and recovery plans.
Bateman contended that individuals who lack competence "do not comprehend" their own incompetence.
The windy weather that hit the LA area was "incredibly unusual," making it harder for firefighters to put out the inferno.
"If you're aware of what may happen, you take precautions. However, they weren't," Bateman stated.
To minimize future harm from natural disasters, Bateman emphasized the importance of voters engaging with elected officials.
"Stop fixating on the 'R' and 'D' next to names. Instead, focus on the individual. Do you believe this person is capable of performing the job?" she emphasized, pointing out how Californians have historically voted based on the "D's" in their names.
"We have elected individuals who lack the ability to handle these tasks. If a competent person has demonstrated their skills and has an 'D' next to their name, vote for them. If they have an 'R' next to their name, it doesn't matter, vote for them. Choose someone you believe can perform this job," she stated.
When selecting a service provider such as a plumber, housekeeper, or car mechanic, it is important to consider their ratings rather than their political affiliations.
"Please seek feedback from individuals with experience with politicians on their job performance. Alternatively, you can observe the outcomes of their actions," she suggested.
Bateman expressed more worry about Los Angeles' ability to host the 2028 Olympics due to the current leadership's "inadequate preparation."
"If people need something to pray for, consider praying that there is no earthquake in Los Angeles while Newsom and Bass are in charge. Pray that there is no earthquake because they may not be able to handle it," she stated.
