Kamala Harris presiding over election certification: 'A somber experience'
On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris oversaw the election certification process.
On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris will preside over the certification of her own election defeat in Congress, and late-night hosts Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon joked about this situation.
""The crowd applauded her opponent while she stood there, feeling like she was attending her own funeral and the mourners were celebrating," Stewart said on "The Daily Show" after playing a video of lawmakers cheering after Harris read out the results in Congress."
On Monday, lawmakers officially certified the results of the 2024 election, with Harris presiding as vice president. Stewart also played a clip of the Democratic lawmakers cheering when Harris read out her own numbers.
"The Democratic cheers sounded louder to Stewart, who exclaimed, 'There’s a lot of joy in that room!' He believed she could still win the election."
"Kimmel remarked on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" that it was similar to hiring your ex-boyfriend as your wedding DJ."
Fallon joked that Harris' role in the certification process on "The Tonight Show" was like ending his dry January.
The day after Trump won the election, Kimmel tearfully stated that it was a "terrible night."
During an interview on MSNBC before the election, the late-night host confessed that he was not adequately prepared for Harris to lose.
"During a late-October interview, Kimmel admitted to his wife that he wasn't mentally prepared for the possibility of a loss. He felt unprepared and needed to get to a state of readiness for either scenario. Kimmel explained that while most of his shows weren't important, this one seemed more significant because many people were asking him for his opinions and following them, making it a big responsibility."
Prior to certification, Harris recorded a video message stating that the peaceful transfer of power is a fundamental principle of American democracy, distinguishing our system from monarchy or tyranny.
She also spoke to the press after certifying the results.
Harris stated that today was a crucial day, emphasizing the importance of the peaceful transfer of power being a fundamental aspect of American democracy that the people should expect as the norm.
President-elect Donald Trump will be officially inaugurated on Jan. 20.
