Julia Roberts criticized for campaign ad advising women to vote differently from their spouses.
In the ad, Julia Roberts conveys to women that they have the freedom to cast their votes however they choose, and their choices will remain confidential.
The release of a Harris-Walz campaign ad narrated by Julia Roberts, which encouraged women to vote differently from their husbands, was met with criticism from many after it was released by the progressive evangelical group "Vote Common Good" on Monday.
Roberts states that in the only place in America where women retain the right to make their own choice, they are free to cast their vote in any manner they desire, without fear of consequences.
In the ad, two women are shown casting their votes for Harris-Walz. After reaching their husbands, one of them asks, "Did you make the right choice?" to which her husband responds, "Sure did, honey."
""Vote Harris-Walz," Roberts concludes, emphasizing the confidentiality of the voting process."
Critics widely mocked the ad, claiming the message was out-of-touch and off-base.
"Denny Burk, a Boyce College professor, criticized a political ad featuring Julia Roberts' voice-over, stating that the ad's message is to take revenge on men who have taken away women's right to choose abortion by exercising their right to choose Harris-Walz."
Caryn Sullivan, an author and columnist, responded to Burk's post with the statement, "Avoid being that woman."
Julia Roberts' ad in the campaign promotes women to disobey or deceive their husbands because the ultimate goal (abortion) justifies the actions taken. This aligns with the campaign's overall theme of dishonesty and misleading claims of unity.
Another user on the social media platform stated that if you need to deceive your spouse about voting, it is not a significant issue.
"This is absurdly condescending, and women aren't stupid," a second X user stated.
"Another X user commented on patriotic clothing worn by a husband in an ad, saying, "I find it amusing that you admit in your creepy ad that only Republicans display patriotic imagery and American flags.""
According to the Wall Street Journal, Vote Common Good, led by pastor Doug Pagitt, spent approximately $30,000 on the ad.
Earlier this month, Roberts, a celebrity supporter of the Harris-Walz campaign, returned to her hometown of Smyrna, Georgia, to urge voters in the state to vote for Harris-Walz.
""I hope all the women here tonight engage in conversations with the men who aren't present, and the brave men here tonight connect with those absent, while we put an end to the fighting," she stated."
"Let's focus on the positive aspects, such as unity, joy, repair, and decreasing prices and rents, so we can fully live our lives to our fullest potential."
In June, George Clooney and Roberts hosted a Democratic campaign event that raised over $30 million, making it the largest Democratic fundraiser in history, according to the Biden campaign.
