Joy Reid of MSNBC criticizes the Democratic Party for being controlled by consultants and donors.
Some Democratic governors have remained silent on whether there should be an age limit for the next nominee.
On Tuesday, Joy Reid of MSNBC criticized the Democratic Party for not giving young and up-and-coming leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., a chance to take on leadership roles, instead of relying on the oldest and most established members.
"Reid stated that the gerontocracy appears unchangeable. He remembered when Obama was elected, he established his own organization because there was frustration with the DNC's outdated methods."
The debate over age and mental fitness among Democrats has intensified, with several governors declining to comment on whether a broad age limit should be set for the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028.
The party's defeat in the election was partly due to President Biden's late exit from the Democratic nomination, which was caused by age concerns within the party. Vice President Kamala Harris took his place on the ticket.
Reid stated that the Democratic Party is controlled by "donors, consultants, and individuals who cling to outdated methods. They prioritize TV advertising, while I am a fan of TV and work in the industry. However, they are not open to exploring new forms of media like AOC excels at."
Nancy Pelosi, a 84-year-old ex-Speaker of the House, played a role in the decision to pass over Ocasio-Cortez, a 35-year-old influential member of the "Squad," for a leadership role on the House Oversight Committee in favor of 74-year-old Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va.
"Does it make sense to you that Kamala Harris represented the generational change that base Democratic voters demanded, but when you go to the House and Senate, no generational change occurs?"
Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, stated to the New York Times that age is not a defining factor in one's life, but rather a state of mind. He argued that setting a specific age limit would be unreasonable. In 2023, Newsom had expressed that he did not view Biden's age as an issue.
Despite some concerns about his age and ability to perform the job, Democrats generally defended Biden against attacks before his rough debate with Trump in June. However, after Trump's victory, Pelosi and other Democrats pressured him to drop out, but Harris still lost the election.
