Jon Stewart praises comedian who made Puerto Rico joke at Trump rally: "I find that guy very funny"
Stewart defended comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, stating that he is simply doing what he does.
Jon Stewart defended comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's performance at former President Donald Trump's Madison Square Garden rally Sunday.
Stewart chuckled while responding to the montage of news anchors' indignation over Hinchcliffe's jokes, saying, "I find that guy very funny. I'm sorry, I don't know what to tell you," as Mediate first reported.
On Monday, Hinchcliffe faced criticism from media networks and politicians for his jokes, which were described as roast-style and included references to Puerto Rico's landfills and other groups.
It was not politically wise for the campaign to invite a roast comedian to a political rally a week before election day and make fun of a key demographic, according to Stewart.
He added, "But to be fair, the guy is simply doing his job."
The comments were later disavowed by the former president's campaign.
Danielle Alvarez, senior adviser to the Trump campaign, stated that the joke does not represent the views of President Trump or the campaign.
Hinchcliffe countered criticism by claiming his critics lack a sense of humor.
"It's wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his busy schedule to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist," he said. "I love Puerto Rico and vacation there. I made fun of everyone… watch the whole set. I'm a comedian Tim… might be time to change your tampon."
