Jon Stewart grimaces as Harris is forced to certify Trump's election victory.
Jon Stewart remarked that Harris's certification of her own election defeat would be painful.
During a viral media moment, comedian Jon Stewart likened Vice President Kamala Harris presiding over her election defeat being mocked to being mocked at her "own funeral."
On Monday, Congress met to certify the Electoral College results, with Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to President-elect Donald Trump in November, presiding as president of the Senate. This makes her the third vice president in recent history to preside over their own defeat in a presidential election.
On Monday night, late-night hosts, including Stewart, made light of the uncomfortable situation while joking on their shows.
"The ultimate indignity of the January 6 ceremony is that Kamala Harris, as the vice president, serves as the master of ceremonies," Stewart said on "The Daily Show," referencing the anniversary of the Capitol riot.
"Poor baby … But it does suck," Stewart added.
In the chamber, cheers erupted after Stewart played a video clip of Harris reading off the electoral college votes Trump received.
"That's definitely going to hurt," Stewart said afterward with a grimace.
"He said, 'It's like attending your own funeral, and the mourners are like, 'Woo hoo!''"
He stated that it was unimaginable how uncomfortable it would be to stand there while the crowd cheered for his opponent.
As Democrats cheered after Harris announced her own electoral votes, Stewart joked, "There is a lot of joy in that room. She can still win this thing!"
"She needs to secure approximately 130,000 votes in Georgia, along with some in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and possibly Wisconsin and North Carolina," he said, trailing off.
The certification ceremony was praised by the comedian as being civil.
"Our democracy functions smoothly when we don't behave like a little jerk when we lose. No names mentioned," he stated.
The certification of the election results by Congress was the last requirement before Trump's inauguration on January 20th.
Since the 2000 election, when then-Vice President Al Gore oversaw the congressional confirmation of his electoral loss, Harris has become the first vice president to do so in her role as presiding over the Senate.
In 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected president, and Richard Nixon, who was then vice president, oversaw the certification of his narrow loss in the election.
