James Carville concedes that Democrats have been preoccupied with Trump, while criticizing the alternative media for disseminating "frivolous information."
At 80 years old, how could I have been doing this for 50 years and become so stupid, Carville wonders.
On Saturday, CNN host Michael Smerconish interviewed democratic strategist James Carville about why he believed Vice President Kamala Harris would lose the 2024 election.
Smerconish discussed a reader's comment in response to Carville's New York Times op-ed from Thursday, which stated, "Character, honesty, decency, intelligence, and democracy do not seem to matter when electing a president in our country." Smerconish agreed with the sentiment expressed in the op-ed.
Carville stated, "I completely agree with that person. The fundamental rule of politics is that voters want an election focused on them, not on you or your opponent. We have lost this focus for too long, and I, too, have contributed to this. We need to make the election about the voters, not about Trump."
Before the election, Carville had predicted a Harris win and even wrote an op-ed for the Times titled "Three Reasons I’m Certain Kamala Harris Will Win."
As Carville pondered the Democrats' focus on attacking President-elect Trump rather than addressing voter concerns, he wondered, "At 80 years old, with 50 years of experience, how could I have become so foolish?"
The longtime Democratic strategist criticized his party's understanding of how people receive their information, stating, "I am going to educate myself on how people receive information. I don’t think Democrats fully appreciate that."
Carville commented on the Republican Party's proficiency in utilizing alternative media, stating, "I believe they excel in this area, but I'm not certain if alternative media is the primary source of information for people now." He further added, "I want to know where these individuals are obtaining this erroneous information from. There is so much misinformation, and it is challenging to rectify it all."
The Biden administration was accused of mishandling inflation and the southern border by voters, who were misled by false information, according to the official. The official claimed that people believed there was chaos at the border and in pricing and inflation, but this was not the case. The official argued that this was not a crime.
He also asserted that Republicans portrayed the crisis at the southern border as an economic problem, claiming that these individuals were coming to take jobs, but in reality, they were not doing so.
For the next election, Carville suggested three issues that the Democratic Party should prioritize: codifying Roe v Wade, raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and addressing taxes over 400,000. These issues have broad support within the Democratic Party and can unite the party. However, the Democratic Party may not be able to achieve these goals.
