On Thursday, James Carville, a democratic strategist, admitted in an op-ed that he had made a mistake about the election by predicting Vice President Kamala Harris would win, and that the outcome was ultimately determined by the economy.

While we Democrats can argue that Kamala Harris's loss wasn't a landslide or take solace in our House performance, the most important thing for us now is to face that we were wrong and take action on the prevailing 'why,' as Carville wrote.

Carville previously wrote an op-ed for the New York Times titled "Three Reasons I’m Certain Kamala Harris Will Win," and during a pre-election interview on MSNBC, he stated that Trump would lose because the now president-elect is "crazy."

"The economy, stupid, is the reason we lost. We must keep this truth as our political compass in 2025 and not let anything else distract us," Carville said, repeating his famous phrase.

He urged Democrats to win back the economic narrative.

For the first time in his political career, Mr. Trump won decisively by winning over middle-class and low-income voters who were focused on the economy. Democrats have lost the economic narrative, and the only way to salvage their electoral prospects is to take it back, according to the Democratic strategist.

According to Carville, Americans believed that Democrats were not taking the economy seriously and were not experiencing the same level of pain as they were.

The writer advised Democrats to shift their messaging away from Trump and emphasized that many people were unconcerned about the president-elect's indictments or social issues if they could not meet their basic needs.

The Democratic Party leadership must create a bold and popular economic agenda and actively reclaim the economic landscape. Carville advised going big, being populist, and focusing on economic progress, forcing opponents to oppose what they cannot support.

Carville advised Democrats to utilize podcasts, influencers, and non-traditional media to disseminate their message, recognizing the "new media landscape we inhabit."

"Democratic presidential hopefuls, your auditions for 2028 should focus on two things: authenticity on the economy and delivering it effectively on a podcast. The road ahead will not be easy, but there are no other options. The path forward is clear: Winning public perception of the economy is crucial for success."

According to Carville, Harris' defeat was due to her inability to distinguish herself from Biden following the election, particularly during her interview on "The View."

If the campaign can be distilled into one moment, we are in a 65% wrong-track country. The country wants something different. In a friendly audience on 'The View,' she asked, "How would you be different than Biden?" This is the one question you exist to answer. It's the money question. Everyone wants to know the answer. But you freeze and say, "I can't think of anything."
