Jake Tapper of CNN concedes that the Hur report on Biden's memory was mostly accurate in hindsight.
President Biden was described as an "elderly man with a poor memory" in a report by Special Counsel Robert Hur.
CNN host Jake Tapper pointed out to Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., that he had been consistently critical of Special Counsel Robert Hur and his report on President Biden, despite the report being largely accurate.
On Thursday, during a segment, Tapper discussed Schiff's criticism of Bondi's claim that most Americans no longer trust the Justice Department.
Tapper pointed out that Schiff and other Democrats have also criticized the Justice Department in the past, despite Schiff accusing Republicans of "trashing" it.
"President Biden criticized the investigation into his son Hunter, stating that the Justice Department was responsible for the investigation. Democrats, including Tapper, were critical of Special Counsel Robert Hur for making an accurate observation about Joe Biden's potential appearance in a courtroom as a 'well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.'"
"Schiff argued that her criticism of the gratuitous personal observations in a prosecutorial memo was justified. She pointed out that such observations were not necessary and were done for a political reason. Schiff emphasized that not everyone, including special counsels, necessarily follow Department of Justice policy the way she believed they should. When they don't, she calls it out. Schiff also disagreed with the president's comments about the prosecution of his own son."
Schiff accused Republicans of a "multi-year campaign" to portray the Justice Department as the "deep state," while Tapper briefly explained the context of Hur's comments before shifting to another topic.
Tapper said that Robert Hur would likely argue that he needed to clarify why he decided not to prosecute President Biden for what he believed was a legal violation.
Despite discovering that Biden intentionally kept classified information, Hur concluded in his February report that he would not pursue legal action due to Biden's diminished mental capacity.
Hur wrote that Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.
During a House hearing in March, Hur was viciously attacked by Schiff when he questioned him about this report.
"Schiff stated that he wanted to revisit his initial statement where he said that he did not disparage the president, but he did disparage him in terms that would have a significant political impact. He added that he knew his report would be made public."
He continued, "Your words were deeply prejudicial to the president's interests, despite your claim that they were not political. You must have understood the impact of your words, as you went beyond the specifics of a document to express your own personal, subjective opinion of the president. You knew that your words would be amplified by the president's political opponent and would influence a political campaign. Yet, you did it anyway."
