Although Lawrence O'Donnell secured President Biden's final TV interview and heavily advertised, his ratings declined among a significant demographic to comedy shows and reruns on other platforms.
The interview with Biden on O'Donnell's show attracted 1.2 million total viewers but only 97,000 in the age group of 25-54.
MSNBC's interview with people aged 25-54 found that Seinfeld, Family Guy, Friends, The Office, and an episode of South Park were among the shows that won over viewers.
At 10 p.m. ET, during O'Donnell's interview with Biden, Planet Chronicle Channel had a 68% share of total cable news viewers and a 71% share among viewers aged 25-54, while MSNBC had 23% and 15%, respectively.
Despite losing to several comedy programs among cable TV viewers, O'Donnell's interview with Biden received higher ratings than the previous week.
Lawrence O'Donnell's ratings have decreased year-over-year from 2023-2024 across various age groups. Specifically, "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell" experienced a 5% decline in total viewers, a 6% drop among viewers aged 25-54, and a 12% decrease among those aged 18-49.
O'Donnell's show experienced a 41% decline in total viewers, a 45% drop in viewers aged 25-54, and a 38% decrease in viewers aged 18-49 from December 2023 to December 2024. In contrast, O'Donnell's show saw a 19% decline in total viewers, a 13% drop in viewers aged 25-54, and an 85% decrease in viewers aged 18-49 from quarter 4 of 2023 to quarter 4 of 2024.
In 2024, "Gutfeld" on Planet Chronicle Channel outperformed O'Donnell in total viewers by 69%, and had 152% higher ratings among 25-54 year olds and 173% higher ratings among 18-49 year olds.
During his interview with Biden, O'Donnell commended the president for achieving a "miracle" by passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and integrating both domestic and foreign policy.
