In 2024, ICE made 15 immigration detainer requests to Boston authorities, but all of them were rejected, according to a new report.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu and Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey have stated their refusal to collaborate with Trump's deportation initiatives.
According to a new report, Boston authorities confirmed that they rejected all 15 immigration detainer requests made by ICE for the city last year.
According to the Boston Herald, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox disclosed in a letter to the city council that the city's police department did not act on any of ICE's detainer requests for the past year.
The Boston Trust Act was cited by Cox as the reason for rejecting the requests, which safeguards the city's sanctuary status and prohibits city departments from collaborating with ICE to detain undocumented immigrants on civil warrants.
"Boston Police Department is dedicated to adhering to the Boston Trust Act and fostering relationships and trust with all communities, according to Cox. He emphasized that Boston's immigrant communities should feel secure in reporting crime and quality of life concerns to the department and actively engaging with all members of the Boston Police Department."
According to his letter, no individuals were detained by BPD last year, nor were they transferred to ICE custody, and no cost reimbursements were received from the federal government in response to requests.
Local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies are requested by ICE to notify the immigration enforcement agency before releasing an immigrant from custody who can be removed from the country.
The Boston Herald reported that these requests seek to have the authorities hold the illegal immigrant for up to 48 more hours, giving ICE the chance to take them into their custody.
Typically, ICE files detainer requests after a court has convicted a migrant of one or more crimes and when the noncitizen poses a public safety or national security threat, as stated by the outlet.
The police commissioner's letter reveals the city authorities' persistent opposition to President-elect Donald Trump's promise to execute mass deportation operations nationwide during his second term.
In November, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu publicly stated through WCVB that her city would not collaborate with Trump's plans.
"Elections have consequences, and the federal government is responsible for certain actions. However, cities cannot reverse or override some parts of that. But we can ensure that we are taking all necessary steps to protect our residents and not support any efforts that threaten their safety, causing widespread fear and having a significant economic impact."
Tom Homan, the incoming Border Czar, criticized Wu's refusal to support Trump's border security plan in November, stating in a recent interview, "Well, she’s not very smart, I’ll give her that. President Trump is going to prioritize public safety threats. What mayor or governor doesn't want public safety threats out of their communities? I mean that's your number one responsibility is to protect your communities, and that's exactly what we're going to do."
Gov. Maura Healey, D-Mass., has stated her opposition to Trump's upcoming immigration plan. Following the election, she pledged to employ "every tool in the toolbox" to safeguard Massachusetts citizens and residents, and she promised that state police would not assist Trump in the execution of the plan.
Although he opposes the future federal immigration policy, Healey publicly expressed outrage after a migrant was allegedly caught with nearly $1 million worth of drugs and an AR-15 rifle at a hotel this week that is being temporarily used as a state shelter.
""This individual abused our shelter system to commit crimes, highlighting the need for Congress and the White House to take immediate action on a border security bill to protect our communities from criminals," she stated."
"The residents of Massachusetts should no longer have to endure the consequences of federal inactivity."
Boston city authorities and ICE did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
