In 2021, LA Mayor Karen Bass stated to the NY Times that she wouldn't travel internationally while holding the position.
Criticism was leveled against Bass for being in Ghana during the wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles.
In 2021, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated to The New York Times that she had no plans to travel internationally after being elected as the city's mayor, as reported by the outlet on Sunday.
Bass stated in 2021 that if she won her election, she would reside in the area and not travel internationally, except for D.C., Sacramento, San Francisco, and New York in relation to L.A, according to the Times.
Despite the fires in Los Angeles last week, the mayor traveled to Ghana and upon her return, Bass ignored questions from reporters about her absence.
According to the Times, Bass previously served in Congress and was a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he spent several years working on U.S. relations with Africa.
The Times reported, "That pledge has been spectacularly broken."
Since becoming mayor, Bass has traveled internationally four times, including once to Mexico and three times to Paris for the Olympics, according to the Times.
Did you apologize to citizens for being absent during the burning of their homes, and did you regret cutting the Fire Department budget by millions of dollars, Madame Mayor? Sky News reporter David Blevins posed this question to Bass as she waited to disembark on Wednesday after her trip to Ghana.
"What do you have to say to the citizens today?" he asked.
The reporter was ignored by Bass as he continued to look away and ignore her questions.
"Do you believe you should have been in Ghana during the time this was happening back home?" he asked.
The Mayor is intensely focused on two key priorities: ensuring the safety of Angelenos and safeguarding property. She has obtained the necessary federal, state, and local resources to combat the ongoing fires and is implementing a comprehensive plan for recovery, as stated by Bass spokesperson Zach Seidl in a statement to Planet Chronicle Digital.
In 2021, Bass was criticized on social media for a post accusing Sen. Cruz of abandoning Texas during a winter storm.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Bass revealed that she kept in touch with individuals while flying back to LA.
"She was on the phone for almost every hour of the flight, in contact with individuals standing here. When her flight landed, she immediately went to the fire zone in Pacific Palisades."
