George Stephanopoulos lands a significant interview with Biden, highlighting his divisive political history.
Nikki Haley was criticized by a former Clinton aide for implying that Biden might not complete his term.
George Stephanopoulos, a longtime ABC News anchor, secured President Biden's first interview after his poor debate performance, highlighting his past partisan affiliations and recent on-air commentary.
Stephanopoulos has a long history of working with Democrats, having served as a key advisor to Bill Clinton in the White House.
In 1994, a New Republic article titled "The Kids Are Alright: Well, Sort of. In Praise of the Stephanopouloses" highlighted Stephanopoulos' close bond with Ron Klain, who later became a trusted advisor to Biden.
During the 2016 presidential cycle, Stephanopoulos's relationship with the Clintons became a contentious issue, as he was discovered to have given money to the Clinton Foundation and had to recuse himself from hosting primary debates.
Stephanopoulos left the Clinton White House following the president's 1996 re-election and later joined ABC, where he rose to become the host of "This Week" and "Good Morning America."
In 2018, Stephanpoulous' interview with former FBI Director James Comey was heavily criticized for editing. The full transcript released by ABC News revealed that it did not air several key moments during its Sunday night special, including when Comey criticized former President Barack Obama.
During a 2020 ABC town hall, Stephanopoulos did not inquire about Hunter Biden's controversial laptop, which had surfaced prior to the presidential election.
During the coverage of Trump's first Senate impeachment trial, Stephanopoulos made a throat-slash gesture on camera while ABC cut away from Sekulow answering questions from the press.
In the 2024 election cycle, Stephanopoulos intensified his criticism of Trump, engaging in heated debates with several Republicans who pledged to back their party's presumptive candidate.
During a segment on "Good Morning America" in August 2020, former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley expressed frustration with Stephanopoulos for suggesting that Biden would not complete his term in office.
"Stephanopoulos interrupted, saying, "How do you know Joe Biden won't complete his term? What evidence do you have for that?""
Stephanopoulos pushed back when Haley suggested everyone feels Biden is simply too old.
Stephanopoulos questioned Haley, "What evidence do you have that he won't complete his term? Americans' opinions lack foundation on whether he will finish his term or not."
Stephanopoulos is being sued for defamation by Trump, who claims he was falsely accused of rape on air. Despite this, ABC has continued to support Stephanopoulos.
In recent weeks, Stephanopoulos has gained popularity for his passionate speeches against Trump on ABC's "This Week."
"In 1774, John Adams stated that representative government and trial by jury are the cornerstone of liberty. Two centuries and five years later, the cornerstone of liberty is facing its greatest challenge, as Stephanopoulos commented following Trump's guilty verdict in his New York criminal trial. However, for now, the New York jurors have given citizens a choice: do we want to be represented by a convicted felon? The answer will be revealed in November."
Stephanopoulos stated at the beginning of the trial in April, "It is easy to fall into reflexive habits and treat this election as a normal campaign, with both sides adhering to the rule of law, facts-based debates, and a peaceful transfer of power. However, that is not what is happening this year."
During his recent book tour, Stephanopoulos criticized Trump's rhetoric and declared it "journalistic malpractice" to interview him on live TV. He also stated that he would stop interviewing Republicans and would not discuss issues affecting Americans unless they accepted the outcome of the 2020 election.
Stephanopoulos stated on CNN last month that he would not participate in a sham where the legitimacy of an election or peaceful transfer of power is compared to a debate over tax cuts or environmental regulation.
On Friday night at 8 p.m. ET, ABC News will broadcast the full interview and release a transcript of the unedited version.
The shocking debate performance of Biden has triggered a political earthquake, with many liberal media outlets calling for him to withdraw from the presidential race, as well as an increasing number of Democratic lawmakers.
Despite denials from both Biden and the White House, multiple reports emerged Wednesday suggesting that Biden had discussed stepping aside from the presidential race with a key ally.
ABC News didn't respond to a request for comment.
