Gavin Newsom jokes about Harris's potential nomination without a primary, saying it's inclusive.
'We had a transparent and comprehensive process,' Newsom remarked.
Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, made a joke about the process that led to Kamala Harris being chosen as the Democratic presidential nominee, stating in an interview on Friday that he was instructed to say it was an open and inclusive selection.
President Biden's decision to end his re-election bid for a second term in the White House led to Harris becoming the Democratic Party's top candidate. Since then, she has experienced a rise in polling and fundraising, despite never receiving a vote.
The Democratic Party's critics have claimed that Harris won the nomination without the genuine support of the voters, but Newsom seemed to find the entire process amusing.
"We went through a very open and inclusive process, which was bottom-up, as I've been told to say," Newsom said with a laugh during a talk with "Pod Save America" on Friday.
Biden announced leaving the race on July 21 and subsequently endorsed Harris, prompting a 30-minute convention between tweets by Democrats.
Newsom, who is widely viewed as having future White House aspirations, remarked, "It's been amazing."
After Biden dropped out, Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, have asserted that the nomination was not manipulated in Harris' favor.
As the clip spread on social media on Friday, it faced criticism.
Journalist Glenn Greenwald criticized the Party of Democracy for their anti-democratic and secretive process in choosing and imposing their new Democratic presidential nominee on the country.
Another critic commented that Gavin Newsom is aware that the Harris nomination was a top-down coup, and they are all cynical about it. Is this the "democracy" they want to save? What a sick joke on their own supporters and this country.
Dumisani Washington, CEO of the Institute for Black Solidarity with Israel, wrote, "The party that frequently talks about DEI and White privilege uses DEI to showcase their own White privilege. Isn't it amusing to see them mock voters?"
Harris formally accepted the Democratic presidential nomination Thursday night.
In March, Biden secured the party's nomination with little opposition, but his disastrous debate performance in June caused a shift in his support. His media allies and fellow Democrats who had previously defended his mental abilities and fitness for office began to criticize him, and even though he initially claimed that only God could remove him from the race, he eventually gave in to the pressure and withdrew.
