Florida sheriff sends a stern warning to potential looters: "We don't tolerate such behavior in our community"
'To avoid committing crime, avoid Polk County'
An American sheriff known for his politically incorrect messaging against criminals claims that his tough stance has deterred potential looters from causing trouble in his county during sensitive periods.
Grady Judd, the Polk County Sheriff, makes it clear to every criminal arrested in his jurisdiction that no crime is too minor to escape the full weight of the law, even in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.
The sheriff's office marketed a tough-on-crime approach before Hurricane Milton hit. They published a sign that read "Fool Around and Find Out" or other similar words, and had zero tolerance.
"No looting has been reported in the massive county of 800,000," he stated.
He stated that he informs his constituents that they possess the right to use lethal force to kill a looter who enters their home.
When confronted with a violent, dangerous felon attempting to break into or enter your home, it's important to remember that deadly force is a last resort. Immediately take them into custody and call us for assistance. However, you have the right to protect yourself and your home.
When they enter your home, they are under your ownership. If you shoot them and they die, it's unfortunate, but that's their own fault for entering your house.
The sheriff said this type of messaging causes criminals to flee.
"Luckily, our looters heeded our advice. Otherwise, we would have had looters," he stated. "We take things seriously here."
"If you commit a crime, you will be arrested and sent to jail in Polk County, regardless of the severity of the offense. We have a zero-tolerance policy for crime, and we will not hesitate to lock you up quickly and keep you there."
In 2020, the sheriff gained notoriety for his blunt remarks on crime, advising residents to fire at home intruders until they become "grated cheese."
"Judd advised that if a looter breaks into your home while you're there, you should take your gun and shoot them to make them look like grated cheese."
