Even liberals and Trump critics criticized the media's coverage of Liz Cheney's comments: 'A bald-faced lie'

The narrative that Trump called for Cheney's execution has been spread by the liberal media, despite it being false.

The criticism of the legacy media's coverage of former President Trump's recent comments about former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., is not limited to his supporters.

In Glendale, Arizona, Trump criticized Cheney for being a "radical war hawk" while campaigning for Vice President Kamala Harris.

"I don’t blame [former Vice President Dick Cheney] for sticking with his daughter, but his daughter is a very dumb individual. Very dumb, she’s a radical war hawk. Let's put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let's see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face," Trump said. "You know, they're all war hawks when they're sitting in Washington in the nice buildings saying ‘Oh gee well, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy."

Numerous media outlets misconstrued Trump's remarks to imply he was advocating for Cheney's death.

The New York Times reported that Trump used violent war imagery to attack Liz Cheney. The Washington Post stated that Trump suggested Cheney should have guns trained to her face. CNN's headline went even further, claiming that Trump said Cheney should be fired upon in an escalation of violent rhetoric against his opponents.

The Drudge Report gained popularity with its prominent headline, "TRUMP SUGGESTS DEATH PENALTY FOR CHENEY."

The sensational coverage happened on-air as well.

CNN anchor Kasie Hunt stated that former President Donald Trump is intensifying his violent language, suggesting that one of his main opponents, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, should be shot.

Jim Acosta, a CNN colleague of Hunt, questioned Rep Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., about Trump's comments, stating, "When he says nine barrels shooting at her, it brings to mind images of a firing squad and an execution, does it not?"

MSNBC's Jonathan Lemire described the recent statement as "another example of dangerous and violent language," while former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie stated on "The View" that it was a direct threat to Cheney.

Despite the narrative, not everyone is convinced.

Across the political spectrum, critics of the former president are condemning the media's portrayal.

"Trump did not call for Liz Cheney's execution," former GOP congressman and anti-Trump critic Joe Walsh reacted on X. "This short clip is so deceptive. Trump is not calling for Liz Cheney to be executed in front of a firing line. He's not. Listen to the entirety of what he said."

Walsh stated that Trump is not calling for Liz Cheney's execution, despite being an utterly unfit and horrible human being.

"Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks wrote that it is a lie that Donald Trump called for the execution of Liz Cheney. While making a point about her being a chickenhawk, Trump should be careful with his words, especially in the current climate of political violence, when discussing guns being "trained on her face.""

Uygur stated, "This is a classic example of Trump making an outrageous statement and the press covering it up by being intentionally misleading. It's not necessary to lie about it for the comment to be completely irresponsible. When you do, you lose all credibility and no one takes you seriously."

Kat Rosenfield, a Free Press columnist, stated that she does not support Donald Trump but also does not support journalists lying to their audiences. When Trump says, "These pro-war people wouldn't be talking such a big game if they were on the front lines," it is not the same as saying they should be shot, Rosenfield added.

Zack Beauchamp, a Vox correspondent, stated that Trump did not threaten to execute Liz Cheney, but rather called her a "chickenhawk," a term that liberals have been using about her for years. Trump's statement was made in the context of discussing giving her a weapon, which is typically not done to those who are about to be executed.

The Drudge Report's headline was criticized by political scientist Ian Bremmer as "extraordinary irresponsibility," which he said is becoming increasingly common across the political spectrum in the United States.

Erick Erickson, a conservative radio host, highlighted that the Trump "bloodbath" comment and his latest remarks about Liz Cheney have been misrepresented and taken out of context. Meanwhile, the press is using apostrophes to justify Joe Biden's actions, contributing to the collapse of trust in the media. As a result, Trump is on the brink of victory.

"Glenn Greenwald wrote that the corporate media has abandoned any pretense of non-partisan neutrality, as evidenced by this WashPost 'news article' about Trump's comments. This is why, as Bezos told them, nobody trusts them: they deserve it."
