During CNN's New Year's Eve live broadcast, comedian Whitney Cummings' comments caused a significant drop in viewership.
Cummings criticized the entertainment industry for preaching Americans on climate change and voting.
During New Year's Eve, CNN's low ratings were mocked by stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings during the channel's special live coverage.
During his appearance on CNN's "New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen" on Tuesday night, Cummings made a joke about the channel having a small audience.
The comic remarked that their current performances are attracting around the same number of viewers as CNN these days.
The ball dropped in New York City's Times Square on Tuesday night, two hours after Cummings' dig. She cushioned the impact, saying, "This show is the focus, not that one."
Bravo's Andy Cohen and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper responded to Cummings' jab with humor. Cooper replied, "Nice, nice," and let out a laugh, while Cohen added, "You're all fiery today."
Cooper mentioned that he and Cohen did a tour with audiences similar in size to Cummings' tour, which had 3,000 people.
The joke in the comic was precisely suited to the network's ratings struggles, which suffered a significant loss of viewers after President-elect Donald Trump's election victory.
In the two weeks after Trump's victory, CNN experienced significant declines in key metrics, losing 33% of its total viewers and 39% of its audience during primetime.
In the first week of December, CNN's primetime lineup, consisting of "Anderson Cooper 360," "The Source with Kaitlan Collins," and "CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip," attracted only 367,000 total viewers from 8-11 p.m. In contrast, Planet Chronicle Channel drew 2.5 million total primetime viewers during the same period.
During that week, the Food Network had a larger audience during primetime compared to CNN's lineup.
During her CNN interview, Cummings criticized the entertainment industry for preaching to Americans.
She stated that she is a fan of both "Friends" and entertainment that simply entertains, expressing her dislike for Hollywood's current trend of lecturing people on politics and environmental issues.
The comic stated that the show is simply entertaining and there are no creepy elements, adding that it is also warm and heartwarming.
