Dr. Ben Carson's educational program highlights the 'good, bad, and ugly' of America, with a focus on the positive aspects.
A range of patriotic activities and books are available for free through Little Patriots Learning, an online resource for parents.
This month, as kids return to school nationwide, Dr. Ben Carson promotes his program, Little Patriots Learning, as an alternative to the U.S. history curriculums that he believes only highlight the country's negative aspects.
According to Carson and his American Cornerstone Institute, Little Patriots Learning, founded in the fall of 2021, is a free online resource for parents that offers at-home activities, patriotic books, in-depth studying, cartoons, star-spangled adventures, and sing-a-longs to teach children about America's founding principles.
"Little Patriots aims to offer engaging educational content that teaches children about America's founding and growth. Through interactive lessons, captivating stories, and fun activities, we strive to instill a sense of pride and responsibility in young patriots, encouraging them to be informed and active citizens."
Carson, a former HUD secretary who ran for president in 2016, founded Little Patriots Learning due to the subpar lesson plans parents experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The classes, according to Carson, did not meet expectations. Disclosing details, Carson revealed that some students were being taught about gender identity. This sparked a renewed interest in homeschooling and the school choice movement.
"According to Dr. Carson, the COVID pandemic led to the discovery that children were not learning the same things as previous generations. The assumption was that they were learning the same things, but it was later realized that there was a lot of propaganda. Dr. Carson stated that America is often viewed as a wonderful place, and many people want to move there. However, the things being taught to young people make them question whether this nation is truly good."
Carson sounded the alarm on critical race theory and Nikole Hannah-Jones' 1619 Project, which emphasizes slavery and its effects on the formation and history of the United States. He highlighted how Little Patriots Learning emphasizes the "Patriots" aspect.
"We strive to educate children about our history, including the good, the bad, and the ugly," Carson stated. "However, there is more good than bad and ugly. CRT and 1619 focus solely on the negative aspects, which does not accurately represent our nation. Understanding our history is crucial to maintaining an identity, and without one, our beliefs are disrupted, making us like a leaf blown in the wind."
Dr. Carson emphasized the significance of distinguishing how schools should teach slavery.
"While slavery has been a common issue in societies throughout history, what sets us apart is the significant number of individuals who strongly opposed it and led to a devastating civil war and substantial loss of population to abolish it."
Carson stated that he was worried about the number of American classrooms teaching children that they are "victims" of oppression. He attributed this concern to his mother, who, despite her own challenging background, never allowed him and his brother to use the label of victim.
""You're only a victim if you believe you're a victim," he said, condemning the victim mentality as a harmful societal attitude."
Carson quipped that the only drawback of their mom's catchphrase was that they were never permitted to offer explanations.
""He became a rocket scientist while I became a brain surgeon, and she was vindicated despite her friends' criticism that she couldn't keep boys in the house or make them read books," he chuckled."
Dr. Carson identified some of his favorite American historical figures, including two Founding Fathers and an inspiring author.
"Carson expressed admiration for George Washington, who stepped down as president despite being offered a chance to become king. He also admired Benjamin Franklin's innovative spirit and Booker T. Washington's emphasis on self-reliance and personal responsibility."
In 2021, Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin won due to education being seen as the main driving force, with parents upset about "woke" lesson plans leading the charge.
Carson predicts that it will significantly impact the November presidential election.
