DOJ obstructs investigation into Trump assassination attempt, leaving Florida frustrated.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody reveals to 'Fox & Friends' that the state is facing challenges in investigating the case of the gunman near President Trump's golf course.
The Department of Justice is being sued by Florida for impeding its investigation into the second Trump assassination attempt.
The Florida Attorney General, Ashley Moody, stated in an exclusive interview with "Fox & Friends" that the DOJ has "obstructed" the state's efforts "at every turn."
On Thursday, Moody stated that Governor DeSantis was adamant about Florida conducting an independent investigation into state crimes, despite working with the federal government. He believed it was in the best interest of the state, our sovereignty, and the American people, as there were concerns that the same federal agencies investigating the assassination attempt were also seeking to prosecute the president, the victim in this case.
"As we progressed with our investigations, we hoped that the day would not arrive, but at every turn, they tried to hinder our efforts. Eventually, they declared that they were suspending state jurisdiction, which would indefinitely halt our investigation. We believe that the law does not support this action."
On Wednesday, a lawsuit was filed alleging that the DOJ has hindered Florida officials from questioning witnesses, pursuing state-level charges, and conducting their own investigation until the federal investigation ended.
The documents state that the harder it becomes to prove Florida's case at trial, the more difficult it is to investigate the state daily.
On September 15, Trump escaped an alleged assassination attempt while playing golf at his West Palm Beach course. The Secret Service fired on a suspect concealed in nearby bushes.
The state of Florida will conduct its own investigation into the matter, as it is in the "best interest" of the state and the country, according to DeSantis.
"It is not in the best interest of our state or nation to have federal agencies seeking to prosecute Donald Trump leading this investigation, especially when the most serious offense is a violation of state law, not federal law," he said last month.
Florida's independent investigation will receive cooperation from the DOJ, leading to a lawsuit.
Immediately after the event, the Justice Department promised to spare no resources to ensure accountability. Since then, our prosecutors and agents have been working tirelessly to gather evidence for accountability.
Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old suspect, escaped but was soon apprehended during a traffic stop near Palm City, Florida. He is currently being held in federal custody.
The Justice Department has declined to comment on the Florida lawsuit.
"Moody stated that many local agencies assisted when the incident occurred. However, they were responsible for apprehending the defendant. Despite their efforts to assist, they have been frustrated in their pursuit of the most serious crimes for state law violations, including those that resulted from the fleeing and eluding."
As attorney general, I will defend Florida's sovereignty and resist federal overreach, despite having had meetings.
Two months ago, a 20-year-old gunman climbed onto a building near a Trump rally in Butler, Pa., and fired at the former president, who narrowly escaped injury.
