Director Francis Ford Coppola aims to steer clear of a "woke Hollywood" lecture in his latest film.
Francis Ford Coppola reveals that his new film features characters who are deeply conservative and those who hold highly progressive political views.
In an interview, Francis Ford Coppola defended his upcoming film "Megalopolis" as one that showcases actors from diverse political backgrounds. The director aims to prevent the movie from being labeled as a "woke Hollywood production that merely preaches to its audience."
In September, Coppola, renowned for "The Godfather" series and other films such as "Apocalypse Now" and "Bram Stoker’s Dracula," will release his upcoming futuristic epic, "Megalopolis."
Coppola's passion project, which he has invested $120 million of his own fortune into after considering it for years, will feature a diverse cast of renowned actors, including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Shia LaBeouf, and many others.
In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, David Fear, the magazine's senior editor, pointed out that Jon Voight's role in the film resembles Donald Trump and speculated that Voight may hold political views that differ from his own.
Coppola stated that he did not want the film to be perceived as a 'woke Hollywood production' that merely preached to viewers. The cast consisted of individuals who had been canceled at some point, and there were those with conservative and progressive political views. Despite their differences, they all worked together on the same film, which Coppola found intriguing.
I believe our republic is on the brink of death, as depicted in the film 'Megalopolis,' which explores themes of death and rebirth in a republic.
""Yes, Coppola agreed. The War of 1812 was also dicey, and they burned the White House," as it has always been."
The film centers on the conflict between Cesar Catilina, an artist who supports a utopian future, and Franklyn Cicero, the greedy mayor of New Rome. Julia Cicero, the mayor's daughter, is torn between her loyalty to her father and her love for Cesar.
In the interview, Coppola elaborated on his plans for his "optimistic" movie to spark a discussion among Americans regarding their political division and the potential future of their nation.
"The director stated that his involvement in politics was a result of his interest in the subject, and his publicist would scold him if he began discussing politics. He added that the movie may not solve all problems, but he believed that discussing the future was crucial for saving society."
He proposed that in order to understand the reasons behind the division of the country, any questions should be asked, which would provide the necessary energy to defeat those who seek to destroy the republic. He created the film to contribute to this conversation and hopes that it will start a discussion. A utopia cannot be achieved without a dialogue.
