Despite record early turnout in Georgia, Stacey Abrams alleges voter suppression.
Voter suppression activity can still occur even if voter turnout is high, Abrams stated on CNN.
Despite record voter turnout in Georgia, Stacey Abrams, a former gubernatorial candidate, is alleging "voter suppression."
In the Friday edition of "CNN News Central," co-anchor Kate Bolduan queried Abrams about her view on the factors fueling the increase in early voting.
Abrams stated that although we are thrilled about the attendees, it is crucial to recognize that high turnout does not necessarily indicate the absence of voter suppression efforts.
One reason for long early voting lines, according to her suggestion, is that residents can no longer vote by mail, which was previously considered an "easier" method.
Despite facing challenges in casting their ballots, people with disabilities and those who have lost their homes refuse to be silenced. In Georgia, despite the government making it harder to vote, people are determined to fight for their right to participate in the democratic process.
The Georgia General Assembly passed Senate Bill 202 in 2021, which made several changes to absentee ballots. Before its adoption, signature verification was the main method of verifying voter identity, as stated on the Fulton County website.
Absentee ballots could also be requested up until the Friday before the election.
The new voting method requires Georgia voters to provide their driver's license number or other forms of voter ID and request their ballot at least 11 days before the election.
Despite Georgia voters breaking multiple turnout records, Democratic critics of the new 2024 presidential cycle rules remain unimpressed, as they were put in place by the state's GOP officials.
""In Georgia, it's now illegal to provide food and water to individuals who stand in line to vote. Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her disbelief at this law during a rally in Michigan, stating, 'The hypocrisy abounds. Whatever happened to "love thy neighbor," right?"'"
In 2022, President Biden referred to Georgia's election security laws as "Jim Crow 2.0."
Since 2020, Georgia's Republican-majority legislature has enacted several laws to enhance voting security following the state's scrutiny in the previous presidential election.
The bill included provisions to increase the capacity to challenge voter qualifications, a regulation restricting the number of ballot drop-off locations based on population size, and most significantly, a prohibition on political groups providing food and drinks to voters waiting in line near a polling station.
Election workers are, however, permitted to set up self-serve water stations.
