Despite claims from politicians and the media, data reveals that Texas doctors carry out abortions to safeguard the mother's life.
Democratic group accused of spreading confusion through misinformation on abortion by pro-life group.
New data from Texas reveals that doctors are intervening in cases where the mother's life is at risk, despite claims from politicians, the media, and abortion activists that female health is at risk with pro-life laws in place.
In the 22 months following the Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, doctors in Texas performed 113 abortions to save pregnant women's lives, according to the latest data from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on induced terminations of pregnancies (HHSC ITOP).
The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade led to the implementation of a pro-life law in Texas, which prohibits elective abortions from conception, except for medically necessary abortions when the pregnancy poses a serious risk to the mother's life. Every state with a pro-life law also includes an exception for the life of the mother.
Kamala Harris and her campaign have previously stated that pro-life laws can hinder doctors from performing abortions when a woman's life is at risk.
The Texas Supreme Court ruling in May allows physicians to use "reasonable medical judgment" to determine if an abortion is medically necessary, but this means women will still be denied access to necessary medical care, putting their health and lives at risk. To the women of Texas, know that you are not alone. @POTUS and I will continue to fight for reproductive freedom.
The Harris campaign stated that a Kaiser Family Foundation survey showed that 68% of OBGYNs believe the Dobbs ruling has worsened their ability to handle pregnancy-related emergencies, and 64% said the decision has increased pregnancy-related mortality.
""Kamala Harris' claims about Texas' protective abortion laws are unfounded, according to the latest report, which shows that Texas' laws continue to save unborn babies and protect women's lives in rare cases where pregnancy endangers a woman's life or health," said Amy O'Donnell, Texas Alliance for Life's communications director, in a press release."
Despite the overturning of Roe, no doctor has been prosecuted, sanctioned, or sued for providing abortions in Texas, and no pregnant woman has lost her life due to the state's abortion laws, even with over 360,000 live births annually.
Dr. Ingrid Skop, vice president and director of medical affairs at Charlotte Lozier Institute, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the initial confusion and fear among physicians regarding Texas pro-life laws were caused by intentional media misinformation. However, the situation has improved after the Texas Medical Board and the Texas Supreme Court provided guidance to physicians, allowing them to use their "reasonable medical judgment" to determine when to intervene and clarifying that the risk of maternal death does not need to be "imminent."
"According to the Texas Induced Terminations of Pregnancy (ITOP) Reports, physicians have been intervening in rare circumstances when an abortion is necessary to save the life of a mother. In 2023, 62 abortions were performed in hospitals, with 77% being performed by labor induction and only 6% by dilation and evacuation (dismemberment) abortion. Additionally, 90% of these abortions were performed between 13- and 25-weeks post-fertilization."
"In Texas, unborn life is being protected, but the state also prioritizes the life of the mother and allows physicians to provide quality care when severe complications arise," she added. "Similarly, the data for the first four months of 2024 demonstrates that 32 abortions have been performed."
The "Med Ed" initiatives in Texas, Florida, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kentucky aim to prevent the spread of misinformation from the abortion lobby, which is confusing doctors and harming women, as stated by Kelsey Pritchard, the director of state public affairs for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
"In Texas, the Texas MedEd rule clarifies that doctors can still use their medical judgment, and they do not have to wait until a woman's life is in danger to act if there is a foreseeable threat. This is an important point in pro-life states, as it allows doctors to act before a dangerous situation arises."
According to SBA Pro-Life data, only 10% of Americans support all-trimester abortion, while a Gallup survey in May found that 35% support it in all circumstances and 50% support it under certain circumstances. Just 12% of the poll respondents were in favor of it being totally illegal.
"The abortion lobby has long claimed that pro-life laws would put women in danger and prevent them from receiving emergency care, which has become their primary talking point and lie in red states, particularly with the passing of Dobbs."
"The Democrat agenda for all-trimester abortion is unpopular with Americans, so they use the number line as justification for not having any limits on abortion, even in the seventh, eighth, and ninth month of pregnancy, claiming that women's lives are at risk if abortion is restricted."
In Florida, Laura Goodhue, a Planned Parenthood employee, stated that the six-week abortion ban would lead to a "public health crisis," while Democratic State Sen. Lauren Book warned that "women and girls will die" due to the law.
In June, the Arizona Democratic AG issued guidance stating that the 15-week abortion law does not hinder a pregnant woman's ability to receive treatment during a miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or other health emergency. However, pro-choice groups advertised that women's lives were at risk. President Biden also claimed that "women's lives are in danger" in relation to the law.
Pritchard stated that the Democrats and the abortion lobby are endangering women's lives through the dissemination of false information.
"The misinformation about that lie is putting women in danger and causing them to delay seeking care, she said. We've heard some horror stories where a few doctors are confused about their ability to provide care, like the story of a woman who was told to wait in her car until she was bleeding profusely. That is wrong and those situations are often created by this misinformation."
She stated that she hoped that pro-choice and pro-life individuals could agree that this action is wrong and that women and doctors need to comprehend the truth about lifesaving care being readily accessible.
