Democrats were criticized by a CNN host for their ignorance, which made them out of touch with voters, resulting in their defeat.
According to a CNN host, Democrats lost the election because they failed to recognize a significant change in American public opinion that occurred over a short period.
Over the weekend, Fareed Zakaria, a CNN host, gave a harsh critique of Democrats in a lengthy speech, accusing the party of misinterpreting public opinion on various issues, including immigration, allegations against President-elect Donald Trump, DEI initiatives, and woke identity politics.
On his show "GPS" Sunday, Zakaria attributed the Democrats' massive losses to a broader ignorance by the left on key issues that put them out of touch with American voters, rather than a single error or oversight.
At first glance, it would seem that last Tuesday's election was part of a 2024 global wave against incumbents facing post-Covid turmoil and inflation. However, Kamala Harris representing the incumbent administration lost decisively, but she could have bucked the trend.
The host stated that employment is robust, wages are increasing, inflation is decreasing, and activity is surging. While Donald Trump possesses several strengths as a politician, he also has several weaknesses.
Zakaria stated that Democrats had a chance to regain political power from Trump following the January 6 Capitol riots, when his approval ratings decreased, "However, they missed the opportunity."
According to The New York Times, Harris is predicted to lose the national popular vote by approximately 1.5 points, marking the first time Democrats have lost the popular vote since 2004, as stated by the speaker.
The CNN host listed three areas where he believes Democrats made mistakes, which led to Harris losing the election.
"Zakaria stated that the Biden administration's failure to recognize the collapse of the immigration system and the chaos at the border was the first major mistake. The asylum system, designed for a small number of persecuted individuals, was being used by millions to gain legal entry. Instead of shutting it down, liberals labeled anyone protesting as heartless and racist. They overlooked a significant shift in American public opinion in just a few years."
"The percentage of Americans who wanted to decrease immigration increased from 28% in 2020 to 55% by this year."
If Democrats were aware of this reality, Harris would have taken a different stance on border security when asked about it on "The View," he said.
The CNN host suggested that instead of simply stating the same thing, she should have said, "I would have shut down the border early and hard."
Zakaria claims that the Democrats' second mistake was their excessive use of law to punish Trump.
"Alvin Bragg's case in New York was the most egregious, despite his initial skepticism, which was reportedly influenced by pressure from the left," he said.
The CNN host contended that although some of the accusations against Trump were valid, the rapid succession of charges gave the impression that the legal system was being used to target him politically. This reinforced the belief of his supporters that urban liberals with advanced degrees were hypocrites who were willing to break rules and norms to achieve their goals.
Trump became a victor from being a loser due to lawfare, he told Democrats directly.
Zakaria stated that the third error of the party was its obsession with identity politics, which originated from the urban academic community but turned off many mainstream voters.
The left has become obsessed with divisive identity politics, according to him, but the term "Latinx" was not well received among the Latino community.
Zakaria pointed out the irony in asserting to be pro-Latino while insisting on the use of the term Latinx, only to find out that Latinos themselves find the word strange.
"The problem is not just about using the right nouns and pronouns. The fixation on identity has become deeply illiberal. Instead of judging people based on their character, we are now evaluating them based on their skin color."
The host of CNN criticized Democrats for supporting "speech codes" and "cancel culture," which have become methods for the left to suppress or limit the value of free speech.
To understand the lessons of the election, one can conclude that liberals cannot achieve liberal objectives, no matter how noble, through illiberal tactics.
Zakaria cautioned against making the same mistakes during the party's event, even though it was easy to criticize them after the fact, which led to backlash from the left.
In an interview with PBS in May, the CNN host advised President Biden to reform the entire immigration system by learning from Trump and taking extreme measures to secure the border in order to improve his chances of being reelected.
Since Trump's victory last week, Democrats have been blaming different party factions for Harris' loss. Some have accused Biden of not suspending his campaign early enough, while others have criticized Harris for hiding Biden's mental decline.
