Dallas police express grief after officer's death in the line of duty: "He gave his life for us"
Darron Burks, a former teacher and officer, was remembered for always treating people with kindness and warmth, like family.
The loss of rookie Officer Darron Burks, who was killed in a "targeted" attack while on duty with the Dallas, Texas police force, is being felt by the department.
"Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia stated on "Fox & Friends First" Friday that the deceased officer was an exceptional individual who embodied the essence of wearing the uniform. He chose this career as his calling and was also chosen for it, according to Garcia."
On Aug. 29, near the Oak Cliff Community Center, a shooting occurred that resulted in the death of Burks and the injury of two other officers. The suspected gunman, Corey Cobb-Bey, was killed in a shootout with police following a chase on the highway.
Garcia stated that Burks was on the phone when he was approached by Cobb-Bey in a parking lot, and within moments, Burks opened fire. Garcia also commended the dispatcher for their "unbelievable work" in recognizing the situation from Burks' radio transmission.
In a press conference after the shooting, Garcia stated that Cobb-Bey had "targeted" Burks and the responding officers.
"Our officers were targeted solely because of their uniforms and the courageous job they do, as stated by the speaker." "It is important to clarify that the term 'ambush' has been used in the past 24 hours, but what occurred here was an execution of Officer Burks."
Garcia stated that Burks had been a teacher for 17 years prior to joining the academy the previous year. His funeral will occur on Saturday at the Watermark Church in Dallas, and Garcia anticipates that it will be "very well attended."
Garcia stated that although he was only a police officer for a short time, he left a significant impact on the department and his academy mates. They looked up to him and considered him the best representation of their class. His departure will be deeply felt.
"His sacrifice and loss strengthen us, and we owe him everything."
Senior Corporal Marissa David, who arrived a minute later, is currently in the hospital in critical condition after being shot in the face by Cobb-Bey, while Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer, who was shot by Cobb-Bey after arriving at the scene, has been released from the hospital, FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.
