Dallas mayor reveals Trump's 'gift' to GOP after party switch.
Eric Johnson discusses his switch to the GOP on 'FOX & Friends,' indicating a possible shift in voting patterns.
Over a decade, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson served as a Democrat before undergoing a significant political shift.
Nearly a year ago, he declared his intention to become a member of the Republican Party.
In a Planet Chronicle op-ed, Johnson wrote that his switch should have served as a warning to Democrats before the 2024 election.
Johnson revealed to Lawrence Jones on "Fox & Friends" that he was unaware of being a canary in the coal mine, stating, "I didn't think I would be an anomaly that everyone needed to worry about."
"I believed I would be a herald of future events, and indeed, that proved to be accurate."
Dallas, which previously voted for Biden by over half in 2020, is now led by a Republican mayor with Johnson's change, making it the largest U.S. city under Republican leadership.
Johnson believes that he joined Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker as one of only two Republican mayors leading a major Texas city due to a broader realignment in cultural dynamics across the country, which he attributes to President-elect Trump.
"According to Johnson, Donald Trump has given the Republican Party a gift by causing parts of the Democratic coalition, which were believed to never vote Republican, to do so."
In 2024, Trump's victory was largely due to his increased support from minority groups, especially Hispanic voters. In Texas, Republicans saw a 28% increase in Latino support compared to the 2020 election.
Trump managed to gain support among Black and young voters, reducing the typical Democratic edge.
Johnson stated that Trump's message is aimed at revitalizing U.S. cities and this is an opportunity for the Republican Party to emphasize it.
Johnson explained that these groups are hoping for an agenda for urban America to occur now.
"It is believed that Donald Trump, our incoming president, can fulfill his promise of revitalizing our cities. I concur and expect him to succeed."
Planet Chronicle' analysis of the 2024 election revealed that Republican voters were most motivated by concerns about the economy, immigration, and crime, which Johnson claims have been overlooked under Democratic leadership.
"Generations of people have asked for things from cities under Democratic leadership, but those requests have gone unfulfilled."
Johnson, a vocal advocate for law enforcement funding, lower taxes, and a pro-business environment, has made his policy priorities clear and expressed his desire to assist the president-elect in enacting his agenda over the next four years.
"We must invest in our cities and prioritize them, rather than abandoning them. I believe this is what he intends to do, and I want to assist him in achieving this goal."
