Could Scott Peterson be acquitted? Convicted murderer's lawyers seek to present new evidence in bid for release
Fox Nation is currently streaming 'Scott Peterson: The Appeal of a Convicted Killer'.
Could new evidence in the high-profile case potentially exonerate Scott Peterson, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the 2002 murder of his wife Laci and their unborn son?
The possibility is on the table with a new team of lawyers backing it.
The Fox Nation special "Scott Peterson: The Appeal of a Convicted Killer" examines the ongoing efforts of Peterson and his legal team to challenge his conviction and present new evidence that could clear his name.
The episode, hosted by Judge Jeanine Pirro, presents new evidence, eyewitness accounts, and Peterson's long-standing pursuit of exoneration.
Laci Peterson, a 7-and-a-half month pregnant woman, vanished from her home with Scott on Christmas Eve in 2002. Her unborn son's decomposed body was discovered in San Francisco Bay months later, in April 2003.
Laci's body was discovered in the Bay shortly after Christmas Eve, just a few miles from where her husband had gone fishing alone.
Peterson's sudden decision to bleach his hair and the police speculation that he carried his brother's passport in an effort to flee to Mexico added to the mounting number of coincidences that fueled the investigation after he reported his wife missing upon discovering an empty house.
Laci's attorneys claim that several reports and recordings were not taken into account during the investigation, as well as a possible burglary that may have occurred near her while she was still alive.
""The Innocence Project, led by Paula Mitchell, has been waiting for 20 years for police reports and audio and video recordings that should have been provided to Mr. Peterson, and we are eager to begin our investigation," according to the Los Angeles Times."
In 2004, Peterson was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to death. However, this sentence was overturned in 2020, and he was instead given a life sentence to serve.
The former mistress of Peterson, Amber Frey, would become a pivotal figure in the investigation.
The Fox Nation special examines her role in the Peterson case, including the recorded phone calls and the 911 tip she provided.
"Six days after Laci disappeared, about 100 miles away, Laci picked up the phone and called the Modesto Police. She had information that would finally give them a potential motive," Pirro narrated.
She was romantically involved with him while he pretended to be single. She realized she was unknowingly involved in his extramarital affair and the police asked her to record conversations with him.
Scott was portrayed as both a cheater and a compulsive liar through the recordings, according to Pirro.
