CNN's former host Brian Stelter returns to the network after being let go by his old boss.
In 2022, CNN fired Stelter as Licht sought to address the network's liberal bias.
Brian Stelter, who was fired from CNN in 2022, has announced his return to the network after the leadership that dismissed him was also removed.
"Stelter announced on Tuesday that he is returning to CNN as the Chief Media Analyst, where he will be appearing on air, developing digital content, and continuing to lead the Reliable Sources newsletter."
Stelter stated that his upcoming return to CNN, which commences on September 9th, will not be the same as his previous tenure at the network, as he emphasized, "I am different."
"Since signing off two years ago, I have evolved and changed a lot. The media industry has matured, and I have also changed my habits and vantage point. I moved from Manhattan to a horse farm near one of Donald Trump's golf clubs and experienced the news as an everyday consumer. This shift in perspective taught me a lot about the attention economy and information ecosystem. I am excited to share what I learned with you."
In his Tuesday announcement, Stelter stated that although he is returning to CNN's "Reliable Sources" newsletter, his "Reliable Sources" TV program will not be revived.
In 2022, CNN fired Stelter by his boss Chris Licht, who aimed to reduce sensationalism and was instructed by his superiors at Warner Bros. Discovery to enhance CNN's journalistic reputation by abandoning its liberal bias.
During his nine-year tenure at CNN, Stelter was highly regarded by Zucker, who transformed the network into a leading anti-Trump media outlet.
Zucker's mission was executed by Stelter as the host of "Reliable Sources," a program that primarily targeted Donald Trump, both before, during, and after his presidency. Additionally, Stelter frequently criticized conservative media while avoiding major controversies in the legacy media, often defending his liberal colleagues at other outlets.
For years, Stelter was criticized by conservatives as the media's "cleaner."
As host of "Reliable Sources," Stelter promoted Russiagate, praised Cuomo's coronavirus response, and in October 2020 dismissed the Hunter Biden laptop story as a "manufactured scandal" spread by the "right-wing media machine." He also considered disgraced lawyer Michael Avenatti a "serious" presidential candidate in the 2020 election cycle.
Licht was fired from CNN less than a year after Stelter's dismissal due to internal strife and a lack of trust among the network's staff, which led to a public uprising.
Stelter's return to CNN as a guest has sparked speculation about his official return to the network, but a source close to his bookings revealed earlier this year that there were no discussions about bringing him back in an official capacity.
Despite being rejected by Licht, Stelter is being rapidly welcomed by CNN's current CEO, Mark Thompson.
"Thompson stated in a Planet Chronicle Digital interview that he was thrilled to have Brian back at CNN in a new role. As the founder of the Reliable Sources newsletter, Brian is a top global expert in media commentary and is the ideal candidate to lead the show into its next chapter."
