Cheryl Hines' actress husband RFK Jr. was attacked, and Maher joked that the "obnoxious" left is more dangerous than the mafia.
Bill Maher on HBO: "The Mafia doesn't go after the wife, but some people do."
Bill Maher criticized the liberals who have been criticizing Cheryl Hines for supporting her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he endorsed former President Trump.
The "Curb Your Enthusiasm" star has been defended by the "Real Time" host from angry liberals on social media who have been criticizing her for not condemning her husband after he suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Trump.
During his HBO talk show, Maher remarked, "Pursuing one's spouse? That's something even the mafia avoids."
After sharing an X post on August 23 expressing support for Kennedy and his campaign team following their decision to suspend Robert Kennedy Jr.'s presidency, Hines faced a torrent of criticism. The statement read, "I'd like to extend a sincere, deeply heartfelt thank you to every person who has worked so tirelessly and lovingly on my husband's campaign."
Despite not being a fan of Trump, the actress's statement appeared conciliatory. Several days later, Kennedy revealed that his wife still supported his decision, despite not wanting to.
"He stated to the outlet that this was the opposite of what she would desire to do. He added, "She agreed to it because she loves me and wanted to be supportive, but it was not something she ever encouraged, in my opinion.""
Hines' Trump endorsement caused leftists to respond angrily, with millions of views.
On Friday night, Maher confronted a group of disillusioned social media users, labeling them as bullies and asserting that they had exposed an "ugliness" to liberals that he had not previously encountered.
Larry David, the creator and star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," described Hines as "the best person I’ve ever met. The one person in Hollywood who doesn't have a single enemy." Maher then shared this sentiment, expressing how Hines is highly respected and admired in the entertainment industry.
The host remarked, "She didn't throw her husband under the bus when he made a decision she disagrees with, so now she does."
He added, "But that didn't satisfy the obnoxious posers on the far left," and then read aloud some posts criticizing Hines, including one from "West Wing" actor Bradley Whitford.
Whitford criticized Hines on X after Kennedy endorsed Trump, saying, "Cheryl Hines, your husband supports an adjudicated rapist who takes away women's rights. Brave move. Setting a positive example for the kids."
Whitford was grilled by the "Real Time" host about the lack of guts in mansplaining to a woman how she should sacrifice her marriage for something on Twitter that met with approval.
He explained why he has a greater issue with the left than he used to, stating that there is an ugliness that was previously absent. He mentioned that the liberals he grew up admiring were not like this.
He stated, "In theory, liberals oppose bullying, but in practice, their attitude is that it's not bullying if they force someone to put their head in a toilet."
Whitford's lack of understanding of basic human dilemmas, such as the need to swallow one's problems when married, exposes the gap between theory and practice in liberal compassion.
