CBS anchor criticizes Trump for not accepting Biden's apology for calling his supporters 'garbage'.
With less than a week until the election, Republicans seized on Biden's comment as a fresh line of attack against the Harris campaign.
CBS News anchor Norah O'Donnell stated that former President Trump is not giving President Biden any leniency over his comment about Trump supporters following the GOP nominee's appearance at a campaign event in a garbage truck on Wednesday.
"Earlier, former President Donald Trump was in North Carolina, and now he is in Wisconsin. He landed in Green Bay just now and then pulled a campaign stunt by speaking to reporters from a garbage truck, proving that he and his supporters are not giving any grace to President Biden's gaffe where he accidentally called Trump supporters garbage."
On Tuesday night, Biden faced criticism after he referred to former President Trump's supporters as "garbage" during a virtual campaign call with Voto Latino. He also criticized Trump's rally in Madison Square Garden, where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made offensive jokes about different ethnic groups, including a joke about Puerto Rico being a "floating island of garbage."
"His supporters are the only garbage floating out there," Biden said on the call. "His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and un-American."
Republicans have seized on the comment as a new line of attack against the Harris campaign with less than a week to the election, while Democrats have defended, dismissed, or downplayed it.
On Wednesday, Trump visited Wisconsin in a garbage truck to address reporters, wearing an orange vest with "Trump Make America Great Again 2024" on it.
"What do you think of my garbage truck?" he inquired, adding, "This vehicle is a tribute to Kamala and Joe Biden."
Biden's "garbage" remark quickly went viral and sparked swift condemnation from critics, but many journalists and news organizations rushed to clean up his mess. The White House, in a transcript of the speech, added an apostrophe to Biden’s remarks, making it appear that he said, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s – his – his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American." Biden himself claimed that he was referring specifically to the comedian at a Trump rally whose shot at Puerto Rico went viral over the weekend.
The Trump campaign swiftly disavowed the joke following its delivery. Trump stated on "Hannity" that he was not familiar with the comedian and that the joke was not reviewed by the campaign prior to its release.
The Trump campaign has been criticized by Democrats and media pundits for a "racist comment," which has encouraged Puerto Rican voters to support Harris.
O'Donnell on her show Monday described the comment as "vile" and emphasized that Puerto Ricans are American citizens. She also shared interviews from Puerto Rican voters who believed the joke reflected Trump's views of them.
Biden stated that he wanted to go swimming with Hinchcliffe when questioned about the comedian's contentious comments earlier this week, but he did not provide further details.
