Border county residents urge Trump to tackle immigration and complete the wall.
What's the purpose of having borders if we can't safeguard them?
Since Trump entered politics, immigration has been a consistent element of his agenda, and Latin Americans in one Texas border county expressed their support for his efforts to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Starr County, Texas, which is situated on the border between Mexico and the United States, is almost entirely Latino. The county switched its political affiliation to the Republican Party for the first time in over 130 years after Trump won it in the 2024 election.
The top issues for Starr County residents in the president's second administration are the border, immigration, and the economy.
Marcus Canales, the precinct chairman of the Starr County GOP, stated that the main priorities are border protection and revitalizing the economy to reduce the skyrocketing prices.
David Porras, a former farmer who switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP in 2024, stated that he hopes Trump will fulfill his pledge to tackle inflation, immigration, and the economy.
"He stated that he sold some property to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the construction of the border wall, and that they went along with it because Trump supports building the wall."
According to Planet Chronicle polling, a quarter of voters believe that Trump's main focus should be on the economy/jobs, inflation, and high prices, while 13% prioritize immigration and deportation.
Other residents also expressed support for Trump's efforts to complete the border wall during his second term.
The Republican Women of Starr County's vice president, Amanda Garcia, stated that the border wall should be the top priority for Trump upon his inauguration.
""It's crucial to ensure that we properly handle the immigration process for families residing in a border city," she emphasized."
Ross, a member of the Starr County GOP, concurred, stating that border security is the top priority he would like Trump to address upon taking office.
An attorney from Rio Grande City in Starr County, Jay Pena, stated that the border is a "crude but necessary solution to an ugly problem."
He stated that it is difficult to consider alternative solutions that could be effective in the long run, which is why the border wall is the only viable option.
Oneida, a member of the Republican Women of Starr County, stated that she wants the wall to be completed.
Starr County residents, including Amanda, feel a personal connection to immigration due to their proximity to the border.
""The focus should be on the families and children, as they are the ones affected by what's happening. There is a lot of abuse and unaddressed issues that need to be addressed," she stated."
Olivares predicted Trump will keep his promise and finish the border wall.
"He instituted those policies in his first term, which were successful and well-liked. We saw a lot of success in the Border Patrol under those policies in the last two years of his first term, and I expect that to continue."
"I believe he will finish it because he promised and I believe in him," Marissa, a Starr County resident, stated.
